I am currently staying at IC HKG. Arrived around 10PM last night with a cab and was greeted by my name. When asked how could he possibly know it was me arriving, the gentleman just smiled and said "Oh, it's magic". I love that little extra touch.
I reserved a superior harbour view room and because of my Gold Ambassador status, was upgraded to a deluxe harbour view. I would assume that the difference is the deluxe has a small sitting area while the superior has only a lounge chair.
The decor of the room is, sadly, very tired looking. When I entered the room, I felt like entering a hotel room done in early 1990s -- the desk is too small, furniture very outdated, TV too small with a color scheme that simply doesn't go together -- basically nothing inspiring. The harbour view, however, is quite breathtaking. The bathroom has 4 fixtures with a deep sunken tub, but the most annoying thing is that there is only one light switch that controls the whole bathroom lighting. There is no individual switch in the toilet compartment, so if switch is on, the whole bathroom lights up (very brightly, I might add).
I was happy to learn that room renovation has started on May 1 and will continue until Sep 1. (I am NOT that happy, though, that I can hear loud banging from the workers upstairs as I am typing this -- but I am not complaining).
This morning had a wonderful buffet breakfast, although I have to say I think GH HKG Grand Club's buffet is hard to beat. I also had a brief tour to the I-Spa. It's difficult to rave about it, especially having seen the Chi Spa at the Shangrila in Bangkok -- that one is quite spectacular. The gym is not bad, but I think I'll be forever spoiled having seen the gym at Grand Hyatt Jakarta. IMHO, that truly is THE best gym facility inside a hotel that I have ever seen.
Overall, I much prefer the regular rooms at GH HKG. They might be a tad smaller, but the design is much smarter. I do hope IC's new rooms in Sep will be as nice, or nicer, than GH's.
I have dinner reservations at YU and SPOON for the next 2 nights and hope will have some memorable meals. I have dined at London's and Paris' SPOON, but wasn't too thrilled about them. Hopefully the one in HKG will be better.
And for those with Ambassador status, in addition to a bowl of fresh fruits and bottled water, there is a welcome amenity of a 15 minute neck and massage treatment, done at the spa between 5PM and 7PM.
