Before flying JFK - BOS next week on B6, I am planning to meet a friend who is arriving into JFK. I have an hour to kill before I see him. I have never checked this -- is free wi-fi available landside (before security check) as well?

I believe you will be able to get a signal pre-secruity. I've had a signal while in the plane waiting to board before. I'm not 100% sure though as it is going to all depend on where the wireless transmitters are located.

I'm not sure about the wireless being available pre-security, but I'm pretty sure that there's not much seating out there, if any...maybe some downstairs by the baggage check, but I don't think I've seen any upstairs at ticketing.
Why don't you go through security if the lines are short? I mean, you have a boarding pass for that day so it wouldn't be a problem, and then you'd have seating and guaranteed wireless, as well as food options if you wanted. Yeah, you'd have to go through security twice, but it's not too bad if you don't have the SSSS on your BP.
There is no seating outside security, but I can understand not wanting to deal with the TSA twice if you don't have to. Odds are that the signal will leak out into the public area and I know that I've seen people working on their laptop out in the airside section of the terminal so there may have been a signal there.

There is seating in arrivals by baggage claim.

Good call....I was thinking of upstairs; I never go through baggage claim (always upstairs to AirTrain) so I hadn't thought of that.

There is limited seating in departures behind the check in counter also.
