I just got myself into trouble by buying two separate one-way itineraries involving HKG, ICN, NRT and SFO in that order. HKG-ICN is one PNR (OZ) and ICN-SFO (via NRT) is on another (non-OZ). All three legs are on three different *A airlines. My question is:

1) can I check my bags through from HKG to SFO, although I'm flying on different airlines and have 2 different PNRs

2) do I need to clear immigration at ICN at arrival, to check in for my second PNR (ICN-SFO)?

I will see if i can think of more complications... Thanks guys

1) Yes, just show your ICN-SFO ticket at HKG.

2) No, proceed to transfer check-in counter.

Sounds simple enough - thanks!

Two further questions:

3) are ICN and NRT equipped to (or in fact are they too big to) handle such complicated journeys confidently? I'm mostly worried about lost luggage of course as I will need it on arrival in SFO. My transfer times are 8 hours (in ICN - where I need to check in for second PNR) and 2.5 hours (in NRT).... hopefully that's enough time.

4) Are there further transit visa rules for passengers who hold visa-exempt (for tourism and business) passports to both Korea and Japan?

3) We're talking about ICN and NRT with the state of art facilities here and ICN is frequently voted as the best airport in the world.

4) No.

Ah... sounds like it's much ado about nothing for me. I will just enjoy my experience with three different *A airlines then, none of which, incidentally, I have ever flown on before !

Be warn especially in ICN as you have 8 hours layover time, I assume your ICN-NRT segment is on UA, UA planes do not park at the gate til close to departure time, make sure the agent check on your luggage tag code before boarding, to know for sure your luggage is on board.

Last time I fly through ICN my luggage almost lost. (I was coming from the other direction, ORD-ICN on OZ, then 7 hours layover in ICN connect to UA ICN-NRT) I had waited more than an hour, was the last bag to come out the belt in NRT despite I had the priority tag on. ( the belt had even stopped unloading the luggage, it seems to me my bag were come from another flight leaving shortly after the UA flight, I know that because not many checked luggage at all for that short flight)

Asian airports stictly follow the rules about priority tag luggages must come out first, if it doesn't, there is something seriously wrong.

Just we aware that while NRT is a modern airport, it doesn't provide luggage check through if it is an overnight connection. So if your ICN-NRT-SFO connection happens on the same day, all is fine. If your connection is however over night then you will need to get your bags at NRT.

One other thing. Ask the airline to link the two PNRs. This way they have greater visibility of the entire journey and this helps with checking bags through.
You still of course carry the risk if something goes wrong.

Not sure what carriers you were flying, but I have done that with NH, it can check thru til the next day flight NH>NH. NRT-ORD leaves at noon, it cannot connect the flight from HKG.
