Renting from Budget in Maui. All the guide books say rental cars tend to get targeted.

In general, I've heard that you should never get the optional insurance from the rental agency. That it's never worth it and you're covered elsewhere usually.

What do you guys think? How much is the insurance at Budget? Do cars get broken into that often in Hawaii?

I asked my auto insurance and my credit card. Auto is the same as my personal cars, but it doesn't cover lost revenue from the time the rental is out being fixed. Credit card just piles on top of the auto policy. Either way, I'm still out my deductible and I'll have a claim on my insurance.

I guess I'm primarily concerned with the LDW policy and possibly the PAE. Prolly all depends on how much they charge a day.

Do you have an Amex Plat?
You will get full car insurance with that, plus excellent travel insurance.

Naww, I just used the plain Costco Amex Business card. Out of habit. It's just what I always use. Prepaid already thru Expedia.

I wouldn't worry about the PAE. I have never seen or heard of a claim made on PAE. Albeit I don't know much about Hawaii, so I'm not sure how often cars get broken into...

LDW usually goes for about $25.00/day and waives the revenue while the vehicle is being repaired, which is called Loss of Use. LOU is usually 75% of the daily rental charge multiplied by however many days the estimate is for the car to be repaired.

It all depends on how comfortable you want to be when you are driving the car...do you want to be worrying about insurance while you're in Hawaii? :) Myself, I think it's pretty cheap piece of mind and good value...confirm that it is a $0 deductible at time of pickup

And where are you driving in Hawaii too...

Was just in SEA over the weekend for a scouting event at a camp in the woods. Didn't think about it driving up (since it was dark) but got a ride back with a friend who rented a car and he mentioned he did get the insurance. He then said his wife would probably be kinda mad since she arranged the car for him (both FF'ers a while ago) and it cost more. Then... I saw oncoming traffic on the narrow dirt road - no problem - as he drives towards the edge of the road, scraping branches on the car... :p If going off the grid - pick it up!

(*I have yet to invest in this as I am covered by both CC and Auto insurance, but if going off the beaten path, I will consider it)
