Hilton HHonors - So what is the deal with the "wedge" wastepaper baskets?
TrinaLC

I've noticed and become quite irked by the thin, wedge wastepaper baskets in many hilton properties - most notably doubletrees...
I can't understand the rationale - since you can hardly fit anything in them, I end up leaving trash on the desk, and/or it spills out of the basket.
I have to believe the design is intended - but the way i see it, they create more housekeeping labor, rather than less ...
What am I missing?

Trina, whatever you're missing, I'm missing it too. I find them very annoying.

Experienced them at HHV in HNL. As to disappointments, the breakfast offering was skimpy. The eye-of-needle sized trashcan was next on the list.

Sounds like you might be missing the small print on them that says they're for recycling?
I've only encountered them once, at a Doubletree in Detroit a few months back so the memory is hazy, but I seem to recall that either on the can itself or somewhere in the room there were "directions" on which side of the can got paper and which "wedge" was for plastics, or something like that.

I don't think you're talking about the same "can". These are definitely wastepaper baskets and they are at a lot of Hiltons. I find them very impractical too.

I'm at a Doubletree tomorrow night and will do my best to see if there's anything indicating it's for recycling. I've noticed them too and have found them odd (read: not very practical).

Had the same in the bathroom of the Hilton Suites in Auburn Hills MI this week. I don't remember anything about recycling.

Is this what you mean? http://www.hiltontohome.com/productDetail.aspx?category1=Bath&category1Name=Bath&categoryLevel=0&itemID=HIL-734-B If so, I find that when lined with a plastic bag, you lose about half of the already small area and they are almost useless.

yep just like that - that size anyway. IIRC the one at HHV was dark mesh metal finish.

I struggled with how to describe them!
My most recent stay where I experienced these was at the very cool doubletree metropolitan in manhattan - a NY modern landmark - that actually is wedgeshaped itself! I wonder if it is the inspiration?
In any event, they are ridiculously impractical - and if the divided one is meant for recycling, (a) it certainly isn't self evident and (b) I doubt you could even fit a soda can in it!

They must have more than one version - this was somewhat like the one in the bathroom - the one in the living room as someone else noted is actually two wedgies (!) in a larger unit - but I can't believe it is actually intended for recycling - can't fit anything in them!

You know, just because I showed the wrong basket, you don't have to get your panties all in a bunch. :D
I have not seen the two wedge basket but those linked to are no bargain when you actually have trash.

Ok, I'm sitting in my room at a Doubletree in Dallas (watching the NFL Draft!...life will suck after tomorrow until early August)...
Brown (dark wood, like a desk) wastebasket with 2 wedges, one is green and says Paper Plastic Glass, the other is a flat brown and says Non-Recyclable Items. The same thing is in the bathroom. This is not what I've seen in the past, a silver wedge-shaped wastebasket which is barely wide enough to hold a coke can. The one in my room is literally just wide enough for a bottle of water or a glass coke bottle.
Hilton's doing their part to recycle, I guess.
Somewhat off topic, only once have I found my towel (which I hang behind the door) there the next day, and I've had Diamond status since '04. Hopefully the recycle wastebasket isn't for show (which the "use your towel again" cards appear to be).

Thanks for the report. I'll try again with a picture http://boomerwomanblog.blogspot.com/2009/03/recycling-on-road-at-doubletree.html

Yep, that's it.
This being a topic of conversation is sad...surely there's something better to discuss.
+5 Agree. The wedge baskets are VERY annoying and very impracticle.

The life of a road warrior is not all it is cracked up to be staying in the middle of nowhere where work is done by 5:45pm, happy hour or an hour in the gym is over at 7 pm, the sidewalks are rolled up at 7:30pm, all your work is done (well you could do some more but there will be plenty of time tomorrow), and you are left paging through yesterday's USA today so you check out the wastebaskets looking for efficiencies. :o

Yea, but when it is time to throw away the USA today, and it doesn't all fit into the wedge trashcan, then you have problem...papers all over the floor.
Had the narrow silver ones at FLL Hilton last week. They are weird.
But it's wonderful opportunity to improve your trashcan basketball skills. Of course bottlecaps are the only thing that will fit through the "hoop."

I laughed out loud when I saw the thread title. I know this is a weird topic, but every time I see those trashcans I think they are stupid. There is some strange comfort knowing that there are other people thinking the same thing.

Yep, that's it.
That is it indeed. Useful to recycle exactly one coke can, and about half of the USA today.
Everything else ends up on the floor.

I too, have been thinking it myself for over a year...but would have never thought to write a thread on it. This thread is much more worthy for Blogspace than quite a few others...
