Anybody know the likelihood of being able to pay for an upgrade to Premium Economy seat from coach on a thursday night LAX to AKL trip in May?
Do the Premium Economy seats on a Boeing 777 usually fill up fast?
How much would they charge to upgrade if a seat was available?
Also, same questions for Business class?
Any help to these questions or really any other advice for this trip would be appreciated to this transpac newbie.

There is no paid upgrade path available on NZ except for 'fare difference plus change fees'. Specific answers to your questions then;
If there are seats available, and you have loadsamoney, good. Otherwise zero.
Yes, it's a popular cabin to travel in (moreso on a 747 than 777 for those in the know).
The full fare difference, plus a ticket chnage fee. i.e. You'd be no better off than having bought the PE fare in the first place.
Same answers for Premium Economy.

Thanks KBD, looks like I'll just Sit Back, Relax, and Enjoy my flight from the back of the plane.
I'm looking forward to seeing the Bay of Plenty & Mt Maunganui.

This is a bit OT but...if you book an ticket in Y and then decide to upgrade the ticket to J, do you think the call centre would waive the change fee? I mean it's not like you are changing flights, just wanting to upgrade your ticket. I would have thought they would waive the change fee in exchange for the additional revenue they are making.

But IMHO the premium economy cabin on the refitted 777 is now better than on the 747 (having sat in them both).

I was unaware that there had been a refit. What s the difference?

Thanks Taupo. The revamped pe sounds great, especially the increased pitch, but it is a shame that NZ haven't taken on board the comments about seat width.
Any crewing changes with the expanded PE?
I just got back from PVG in J (12 pax) and noticed the crew were very stretched to service us and PE (in the old two row PE configuration).

nz_crew has said that one Y crew member will be assigned to Y+/J (no extra crew) and the FSM will help in Y and hopefully the Concierge (if onboard) helping in premium cabins.

To clarify - there will be an additional premium crew member on the reconfigured 777.
There are currently 10 crew - FSM, ISC, 3 Premium, and 5 Economy.
The reconfigured 777 will have FSM, ISC, 4 Premium, and 4 Economy.
The impact this will have on Economy service is yet to be seen - yes there are 27 less seats in the new configuration, but one less FA down the back is a big deal when you have only 10 on the plane to start off with.
I expect there will be a slight net 'gain' for the Premium passengers however, since 18 extra Premium Economy won't increase the workload as much as additional Business seats would.
