Welcome to FT theGutter!
I saw the article and had a quick look at the Choice comparison it was based on. I noted that they were basing the flight part of it on redeeming economy class tickets, which is, AFAIK, the least efficient way of redeeming points for a flight. If you were to use the points for international business class redemptions or upgrades the figures change somewhat.

For the average reader of the article it is probably fair enough.
But for a points runner it is way too simplistic and ignores such issues as:
* sign on bonii
* waived fees (or paying yearly fees)
* extra points promotions (which seems to just be Amex in the main as the others mainly just offer various bonnii on joining either asa lump sum or increased points per $ for a limited period or spend amount).
For those wanted to maximise points aquired for minimised cost the reality will probably not be not sticking to any one card and making the most of promotions as they come along.
Not as relevant to QF anymore post April 1, but the Amex Maximiser Card blows most others out of the water in yearly points gained per $$ spent due to it having regular promotions for existing card holders. This is so even after ignoring the Everday "mistake" promo. This is why this CC is my card of choice. Though I do take advantage of other cards when deals present.
If someone is only spending a $1000 or so per month and they are paying yearly card fees then they would probably be better of without a FF credit card than with one.
