I want to book a 1 night award stay at the Fess Parker Doubletree in Santa Barbara. I know there are standard rooms available, but I can't book only a Saturday night stay. It appears there is a 2 night minimum paid stay on summer weekends, but can they apply this to award stay as well if a room is available? Has anyone found this to be true on any other properties? Any workarounds?

You can try calling them directly or waiting until very close to the date, they will sometime free up the two night minimum. I've seen it at several other properties on weekends.

I'm in the hotel industry, and what they've probably done is put a general "min 2-night stay" restriction for arrivals on that day (which would affect every booking). However, these can be overriden by the property, and since you're using an award, and hotels receive minimal re-imbursement for award stays, they'd probably want to try and re-sell that second night to a rate paying guest...OR... refuse your request outright and make you redeem a 2-night award stay, which you might not want to do and they know this, thus allowing them to sell the room for 2 nights to a rate paying guest. It all depends upon the occupancy levels expected for those dates.

I've got a wedding to attend and had the same result at Fess Parkers. A lot of other hotels are doing the same thing. The Four Seasons is offering one night free with a three night stay so I opted for that. They will let you book one night. Let the rooms at the Hilton stay empty. It's not likely that my Gold HHonors status will get me an upgrade as nice as a free night at the Four Seasons.

How does the minimum night requirement fit in to this promise on their website:
Fact: If there’s a standard room available at any Hilton Family hotel or resort worldwide, you can redeem points for it. No exceptions, no fine print. It’s that simple.

I don't think that will save you .... if there is a 2 night minimum then there is no standard room available for a 1 night stay.
Have you called the hotel (as suggested earlier) and asked for them to waive the 2 night minimum?
If you have Hilton status (Diamond or maybe even Gold) you could also call Hilton HHonors and see if they can help (i.e. they may call the hotel for you).

I would write HH customer service and ask them that exact question!
