Hawaii-based Airlines - HA miles; refund miles for cheaper ticket?

We are going to Maui May 2 and arrive at HNL @ 12:55p. Currently we have a 2:55p HA reward flight scheduled to OGG, but we now see some attractive $38 fares at an earlier time (1:38p)
Wondering what might be the the best way to do this. Should we re-deposit the miles back to our account and hope that we might use them before they expire then buy the $38 tix at the earlier time we'd like (1:38p)?
Also, if we buy an earlier ticket and we miss the flight, is it likely that they would just put us on the next flight?
Insight and advice please...

This may be a little late, but just so you know, redepositing award tickets cost $30 on HA. It'd be more cost effective to go with what you've booked, rather than spending $30 to redeposit and then another $38+taxes to book the fare.

Wholly unused award tickets may be redeposited for a fee of $30 USD.
