What's going on with the cancellation of flights out of JFK today. I checked city pairs JFK/ORL, JFK/FLL, JFK/TPA, JFK/RSW 1-2 r/ts cxld. Then looked at JFK/BUF, SYR, BOS, & IAD 2-3 cxl's. Are they cxlg due to low load factors (advanced bookings)? This was at 2.00pm this afternoon. You can't tell me wx is the problem. Flt ops problems, crew time??? end of the month.

Bad weather. BTW, B6 doesn't fly to ORL. Did you mean ORD?

You can't tell me wx is the problem. You can go to this page (http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp) and see for yourself. On the map, click on JFK:

Due to WEATHER / LOW CEILINGS and WEATHER / LOW CEILINGS, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 3 hours and 24 minutes. To see if you may be affected, select your departure airport and check "Delays by Destination".And welcome to FlyerTalk JBUFLY1!

Looking at the map, I'm suprised how well BWI is doing (green) compared to IAD and DCA (both red).

Welcome to FlyerTalk!!

They are almost certainly being canceled because of ATC restrictions that are limiting operations at JFK tonight. B6 was proactive in canceling in advance since they knew that the flights would be horribly delayed or canceled later and they can probably accommodate most of those passengers with the remaining frequencies they have running.

And the weather troubles are very real. Sure, it is just rain, but with the gusty winds and low visibility the ATC will be slowing things down and spacing flight more than not.

Also, ORL is the downtown executive airport; the commercial field is referred to as MCO.

Head to this website www.fly.faa.gov/ois and you can see how long the average delays are. Right now JFK is experiencing an average delay of 201minutes.

Weather is the problem. And the accompanying ATC initiatives that go along with it. sbm12 summed it up quite nicely, and even as I type this (9:04 pm ET), there are numerous ATC initiatives in place around the US:

EWR: WEATHER/LOW CEILINGS
Average delay: 3 hours and 23 minutes
Also under a GROUND STOP expiring at 10:00 pm EDT.

JFK: WEATHER/LOW CEILINGS
Average delay: 3 hours and 21 minutes

LGA: WEATHER/LOW CEILINGS
Average delay: 3 hours and 8 minutes
Also under a GROUND STOP expiring at 10:00 pm EDT.

PHL: WEATHER/THUNDERSTORMS
Average delay: 2 hours and 9 minutes

TEB: WEATHER/WIND
Average delay: 4 hours and 9 minutes

Just to name a few. So, yes, weather very much is the problem. Keep in mind that these average delays are after all the round trips you mentioned have been cancelled.

It's rainy and visibility is very poor this morning. Expect another day of delays and cancellations in New York.

Well, they kinda do, since ORL=Orlando's city code. They just only serve MCO airport. :)

Very true... Point well taken. But you can the same arguement for NEW and MSY, CHI and ORD, and KCI and MCI.

Don't forget about the closed runway in JFK, which is not helping either I imagine. My flight from MCO to JFK was boarded full with jumpseaters ready to go ON TIME today only to be told that our wheels up time was over 3 hours later. We deplaned and had to reboard at a better time. The rate of arrivals per hour by ATC has been HEAVILY restricted and impossible to operate as scheduled.
