Other Middle East and Africa Frequent Flyer Programs - Last minute bookings with Etihad? Forget it

OK, so you want to fly with Etihad at short notice, in business class? Forget it.

Just tried to make a booking JNB-DXB in Pearl. The website refused to book it, as it was within 24hrs of actual departure time. Fair enough; instead it tells you to ring CS and make a booking over the phone.

I did this, all went as normal, they took my credit card details, and even issued a PNR number. But that's not enough - they also want you to fill in a CC authorisation form and "fax" (remember them?) it back to them.

I said, okay, and waited for the form. It came (eventually), I filled it in and sent it back. Nothing. Rang them, of course "offices are closed" now etc. This is Friday.

Next morning, Saturday, I rang them to confirm the ticket. This is the day of travel. "Ah, we are waiting for the ticket office to open sir". When is that? "Monday sir" :(

So how am I going to confirm this ticket then? Can I do it when I get to the airport? "No sir, we do not have a ticket desk at the airport".

What if I travel the following day (Sunday)? Does that buy some more time to confirm it? "Sir, ticket office is closed until Monday".

So what you are saying is, if I try to buy a ticket on a Friday for a Saturday or Sunday flight, this is literally impossible? "I suppose so, sir".

In the middle of all this, I asked CS what was the deadline for confirming the ticket, given that the flight left at 1335. "Cut off is this evening sir". But the flight leaves today, at lunchtime. "It would have to be confirmed by this evening sir, or you can not travel". I give up. Of course this is just BOM call centre, extremely low quality, no doubt 0.0000003% of the spend on the glorious planes.

What's irritating is having issued a PNR number on Friday I relaxed and assumed all would be well. Stuck my money with Emirates instead. Seatcounter for the Etihad flight was showing J=9  One wonders how these cash-rich Middle East airlines will ever survive if real market conditions ever come their way.

Wow thats surprising to hear! Cant believe they would let a full fare last minute business class traveller just go to their competitor like that...Have you sent a complaint through to them?

Why in the world didn't you book with a travel agency or online agency?

An online agency is a no-go in this situation - they too would not have time to confirm the ticket. That is my (bitter) experience.

Hmm a travel agency - I confess I have completely lost touch with the idea of using them. I wouldn't know where to start. In 2009, it is a reasonable expectation to book all your own travel. Most airlines have the payment processes to support that.

I don't quite understand your thought that an online agency is a no-go. For example, I had to purchase a last minute ticket on Thai and they too have weird policies for direct purchases, so a quick trip online to Expedia and I had the flights booked and eticket numbers in less than 30 minutes. Yes, I had to pay a $6 fee, but it saved me alot of time and headache and I flew on the airline and flights I wanted.

On a side note, if you had a good personal travel agent, they almost always have a 24 hour emergency service that you can call. They will make the reservation and print the tickets in less than 5 minutes and then you have no problems at all. Yes, it does cost you a $25 - $50 transaction fee, but if you are the type of person to be paying full fare for F or C class tickets, then a transaction fee should well be worth it.

I know that many people believe that in this day and age of DIY travel booking makes them an expert in travel and travel products, but I just don't buy it. Leave the medicine to doctors, the law to attorneys, and leave the travel to the travel professionals that have so much more experience than you or I could ever have.

Twice a similar issue happened with me with EY, as well as with QR (if you think this issue is a problem with EY, QR is a problem if the flight is within, say, 3 days of travel). In cases where an e-ticket can be issued, the way around for me was with a travel agent.

FWIW, I didn't have a problem with an online agency for EY several hours before travel before (like Expedia or a site based on ITA, say).
