Hello,

I'm UK based and have around 16,000 miles in my Asiana Club account which I started a number of years ago but have not used for some time. The miles are those which do not expire, but as I have no plans to visit Korea any time soon, there is little chance I can use the miles for a redemption.

Primarily I fly Oneworld, but being UK based, any Star Alliance travel is now credited to my BMI Diamond Club, therefore it is highly unlikely I'll add to the 16,000 miles. I'm wondering if there is a charity that they can be donated to, or if anyone can suggest a way of transferring these miles to someone who may be able to use them.

Failing that, as they will never expire, should I just hang on to them in case?

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Just hang on to them, you never know when you will need it;)

Hi inasmuchas! Have you forgotten your long lost uncle? I am still in Australia and happy to share your miles via the family mileage plan. ;) :D

Unfortunately there is no such thing as magazines etc. which you can pay for with OZ miles. Not a very flexible program in this respect.

same situation,

personally I have 20k miles and another 15k belonging to another member of my family...my problem is bulk of my miles are UA and travel UA quite a bit...fortunate those miles are the non-expiring kind... it is unlikely I will be OZ anytime soon (unless OZ have a ridiculous good deal) since ICN is a bit out of the way and cost me about 9 hours travel time each direction transpac...

suggest to OP to burn thru the BMI miles, temprorary switch *A mileage to Asiana, then burn thru a *A/OZ award, then switch back.

Alternative is to switch earning to OZ, fill up for min award ticket, then switch back to BMI

The one problem with switching to OZ enough to get an award is that their earn/burn ratio is considered by most to not be very good. Depending on what sort of minimum award would be useful, you might actually be wasting more miles in trying to use your existing orphan miles. Especially if earning on BMI vs. OZ. You need to crunch the numbers first to verify that you're not being penny-wise but pound-foolish in doing so.

The miles require for redemption for award with OZ are much higher than others, and not all fare class earn 100% miles. Besides, under the new rules, your miles will probably expire before you can use it.

Just keep it. It will go forever unless Asiana changes its rule again. With 16k, 3 one-way Korean domestic flights, or 1 Korea-China/Japan one-way ticket you can get, or you can give to your family. It might be helpful if you happen to visit Asia, and to make cheap routine. Who knows how Asiana will change in better way, so just keep them.

Or when you fly Asiana, you can purchase inflight duty-free items using miles, with more or less 10 USD/2000 mile ratio, with very limited selections. Or you can book selected hotels, in worldwide. There are many many more options - movie theater or online shopping mall, etc - but exclusively for those living in Korea. Unfortunately, all these information are only available in Korean language. dang!

Isn't OZ just change its rule saying miles do expire now ?

I believe they were referring to miles earned prior to Oct. 1 2008, in which case they never expire. It is only miles earned after that date that expire in 5 or 7 years.
