I will have three/four free days to see some things in the Frankfurt area in July. I am familiar with the area, but would like to go on a "road trip". I like wine and think it might be nice to visit some vineyards. It would also be nice to get off the beaten path. I figure I will rent a car and stay within a 2 hour radius of Fa.M. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking that Heidelberg, Wuerzburg and Bamberg would be nice.

I guess you could do a Mosel wine tour. The Mosel Saar Ruwer region is one of the best in Germany. It's close enough to Frankfurt. Charming landscape and old villages, too. Probably you can get more info when you just google "Mosel wine region" and "Mosel wine tour". Others will certainly chime in but this would be my first reaction.

Alternatively an Alsace wine tour would also be worthwhile.

Careful with DWIs. The limits are quite low, similar to the US.

As an alternate, if you wanted to stay around Heidelberg or Mannheim, you would be right by the towns of the Baden wine region. Another alternative would be to head down and explore some of the Nahe wine towns. Bad Kreuznach and Bad Muenster are two towns in this region, with several other smaller towns a little farther out.

Take a cruise up the Rhine River and take time to stop and enjoy some cities and some wineries.

The city of Worms in Rheinland-Pfalz is worth a visit if you're into history. It's about an hour's drive from Frankfurt and there is lovely rolling countryside in the vicinity. There are also a few vineyards around: these being some of the less-frequented by tourists.

We reserved a compact at the airport. When we showed up we were upgraded to a Mercedes C Class. We knew then it was going to be a good trip. We drove to Bamberg and stayed at a small nondescript hotel called the Hotel Zur Post or something similar. Bamberg was great. The smoked beer was like drinking a ham. We then drove early next morning to Rothenburg, walked the wall had some coffee near the Rathhaus and toured the town. At about noon we hopped into our ride and drove to St Goar. We stayed in the Hotel Hauser. Our balcony overlooked the rhine - GREAT DEAL!
