American Express Membership Rewards - Amex and Credit Line Reallocation - Still a No Go

FYI: Amex continues to be unable to reallocate credit lines between cards.

I was planning on going after an HHonors Surpass card. Called in to see if I could to do a "product change" from my dormant Blue card to the HHonors card. She said the system would not allow it because the Blue card can only convert to other blue cards (Clear/Blue Cash/Blue Miles). She though it was due to the natue of the Blue product.

She could do a "product change" from my Skymiles or Starwood cards, but not I did not want to lose either card.

I have a high amount of credit from Amex. I asked if I applied and was approved for a HHonors Surpass and received a small line (which is what happened when i got my Skymiles card last summer, approved for $1000), would I be able to move credit from my dormant Blue card to the new card? The answer was "no, the system still does not allow us to do that".

Very helpful and courteous rep, and she tried really hard to make it work, but no HHonors card for me. :(

You mean no card with the limit and history of your previous card, right? You still could have applied for the HH card as I read it, and you do not know what the limit would have been.

While technically not transfering credit line from a card to a card maybe they could adjust your new HH card credit limit (if needed) to reflect your creditworthiness if you asked for a credit limit reduction on your Blue card? Doesn't hurt to ask. ;)

You might consider closing your Blue card before applying to the Hilton card.

She tried like heck to make the Blue into a HHonors and could not.

I have a bunch of Amex cards, I do not believe in this climate that they would give me another one.

I'm also reasonably certain that if they were to offer me another card, they would not give me a min 5 figure limit that would make it a useful card (to me).

I'm not interested in gambling that closing the Blue would open me up for the HHonors card.

Its not the end of the world.

One the limit is set, Customer Service does not have the power to adjust it. No one seems to know who sets it in the first place.

I just call the Amex credit department [Credit Department 800-238-8091] for adjustments. They are the department that sets the limits in the first place.
Don't tell them I said that!

I had that problem last summer. Amex could not switch my blue to Hhonors - only to other blue cards. She did find that I could also switch to the Delta Reserve (it had just come out). Once the switch to Delta occurred, I requested the conversion to Hhonors and it worked. I wasn't even charged the fee for the very short period I had the Delta reserve. Although I couldn't go directly from Blue to HHonors, I was able to go Blue to Delta to Hhonors. Why not try that and see if it works for you?

Just tried again (twice - 2 different reps). Not anymore it seems. Thanks for the idea!

Tried one more time. Got another very competent Utah based rep. He advanced the theory that since my Blue card is an original Blue (the one that used to have the chip in it) that maybe why it won't convert.

We converted it to a Blue Cash, effective with my next billing cycle. I'll try it again next month.

I had issues but got all my 3 cards reallocated last month. Had 65k on one card and had them move the credit back over 3 cards. Guess I was lucky!!

I was completely turned down for the Surpass card. When I spoke with the Surpass supervisor and explained to him that I have a Centurion card and about a $150k spending limit he gave me some crap about faxing them a copy of my credit report. I'm totally wondering who is more screwed up: me for paying for the lame Centurion card, or them for doing business this way.

Is it possible to consolidate multiple blue (or clear) cards with one combined credit line?

Is this specific to a type of Amex or they cover any of the Amex credit cards?

This is the credit department for all cards I believe. I've never been transferred once they answered regardless of what card or cards I was calling about. Usually a pretty quick response of "Yes We Can Do It" or "No We Wont Be Able To At This Time".

Any recent experience with credit line reallocation with AMEX cards? Specifically, business credit cards?

I have a few AMEX cards (primary cardholder on SPG Personal, Blue Personal, SPG Business, and authorized user on Platinum Charge) and just applied online (and was approved) for a Delta Platinum Business credit card. I found out that the limit is only $3000. Not a big deal, since I really only got it for the generous sign up bonus of 40,000 Skymiles and 15,000 MQM. However, if for some reason I actually want to use this card to buy Delta/NWA tickets, I will want a higher limit. I have a $10,000 limit on my SPG Business and much higher limits on my personal cards. Anyone been able to transfer business lines lately (either between business cards or between personal/business)?

Thanks.

I'm having the same issue. My Delta Reserve Amex just arrived with a paltry $3100 credit limit. It will be tough to hit the 30,000 spend level for the bonus MQMs on the card with a limit that low. My HHonors Amex has a 20K limit...

Update - I just got off the phone with Amex customer service, and was able to reallocate my credit line from 21K on Hilton Amex and 3K on my Delta Reserve to 12K and 12K respectively. So they are doing it....

Earlier this month, I applied for a AX DL SM card and was approved. The customer service rep suggested/recommended that I move some credit limit from another AX DL SM to the new card. I agreed.

I read on creditboards that the "rule" is still in place. They are making exceptions for all Delta products.

That is correct. I have called and it has been confirmed by CSR supervisor. Only new Delta Amex cardholders are permitted to move credit lines.

Glad to see that some sanity is creeping back...
