If one should attain status either by flight segments or mileage this month, do the benefits start immediately or does one have to wait for the following year?

Immediately.... Although "immediately in Hawai`i time means, usually, within a couple of weeks :)

whenever you get the credit (that puts you over) added to your account, the benefits kick in early and good for all of the following year as well. but the credit needs to be added first so it may take up to 10 days.
