Saw Terry's show on April Fool's Day (mid-week) on a Mirage comp ticket worth about $120. Fairly nice seats 4 rows back. Looking around, the showroom was fairly full. You could feel the excitement of the crowd before the show began. A DJ was onstage entertaining prior to the start of the show. He then introduced Terry.
Terry is a fabulous ventriloquist...no discernable lip-movement, excellent hand-work with the puppets.
I thought Winston The Impersonating Turtle was the best of the bunch.
The other puppets, not so much. Not their fault, it was the material they were working with. That's really my main criticism. Terry could use some help with writing the material. An example was the inebriated Walter T. Airedale. After a while, the act just really started to fall flat.
I was disappointed with Terry's first brand new character created specifically for The Mirage: Vikki. She appeared late in the show. One again, the dialogue seemed to fall flat.
The band was great. The puppets "sing", Terry sings.
When Terry introduced his assistant, Jenny (?), the crew pulled an April Fool's joke on Terry (could be a standard part of the act, I dunno). Instead of the eye-candy Jenny (?), out comes a guy in a sack dress and wig. Terry bowled over. Jenny (?), a real hottie, finally came on stage.
Another time in the show, Terry and a puppet got their lines crossed. Terry realized his mistake, and hid his head behind the puppet, composing himself. No one cared about the gaffe. It was funny with the audience.
Get a cheap seat, if you'd like. The video monitors show Terry and his puppets up close.
All in all, it was a fun evening. The audience seemed to enjoy it, although the crowd excitement seemed to wane as the show wore on.
Memo to Terry: re-write the dialogue.
Be sure to pick up the $10 Official Souvenir Program. It'll tell you a lot about Terry. He'll autograph it for you after the show, and you can get your picture taken with Terry. I passed on the autograph and picture, after seeing the line, as I had a pressing dinner engagement.
