We have run into a tricky-for-us situation -

My wife and I share a Citi-AA credit card. Ie, we each have a card with our name, but with the same account number. My name and card number is registered with AA Rewards Network, primarily to pick up a few miles now and then from dining (our lifestyles are such that I end up eating out alone much more often than she does).

Now we need a hotel stay for 5 days. Ordinarily I'd have made the reservation. If we go through the AARN, they pay 5 miles/dollar, plus 1 mile/dollar for using the card itself, so we are looking at 6000-7000 miles. This seems to be the best miles deal at present.

Trouble is, this is a business trip for wife who needs the reservation/receipt in her own name for the eventual expense report, and also because our schedule is such that she'd be checking in alone 1-2 days before I arrive. In this case we wont get any miles (except the 1 mile/dollar) because AARN says that name + card number must match for us to get 5 miles/hr; they won't register the same card in both our names.

I wonder if anybody here has run into similar situation and figured out a way for AARN to work with a card number, regardless of which family member uses it?

In the meantime I am brainstorming with less-than-ideal options:

(1) We cancel my AARN membership, start another one under Mrs Aktchi's name with the same card, so her account gets 6 miles/dollar.

(2) We keep my membership, but register another card in her name, so her account gets 5 miles/dollar.

(3) We reserve under my name and take the chance the hotel would let her check-in and also agree to issue a duplicate receipt in her name for her expense report purpose.

Any suggestions greatly welcome. I am hoping that I am missing something obvious here which will do the trick. :)

Over to the RewardsNetwork/iDine forum, where there may be more experience with hotel bookings.

DO NOT CLOSE ANYTHING. LEAVE THE ACCOUNT OPEN!

I would do the following:

1) Add another CC in your name to your AARN account.
2) Remove the CC you share with your wife from your RN account.
3) Open an AARN account in your wife's name.
4) Add the CC you share together and in her name to your wife's AARN account.
5) Make the reservations for her trip.

If you follow the list above, you will be able to keep your AARN account, she will be able to use your shared CC for the miles, and all will go on her expense report.

No problem aktchi. I am glad I could help. Enjoy the trip and the extra miles.
