I'm going to be flying to TPE in Economy, likely from JFK (I live in Philadelphia). I'm *G through US, so I want to earn the EQM's and enjoy the *G perks on my trip as well.

It looks like my best two options are OZ and NH. From what I understand from reading ratings, OZ is superior in Economy. If anyone here can give me some real-world experience, I'd be grateful.

Thanks.

You get 70% EQM on NH as opposed to 100% EQM on OZ AFAIK (generally speaking, it really depends on your fare class). Economy product wise, I think they are pretty much on par. Ground service wise like lounge, I perfer going through NRT as you can get a nice amenity kit in NRT RCC and ice cream in NH lounge.

Isn't there are some Y fares also only earn 70% of RDM on OZ as well ?

I saw there are two on UA MP, not sure for US though, but at least better than on NH all Y fares earn 70% except full fare Y.

I think it is also for one to consider as OZ out of JFK is a redeye, compare to NH is a day time flight.

I personally hate to fly redeye especially in economy, then being tired and have to connect to a second flight.

Yes, there are some Y fares that only earn 70% or 80%. Interestingly though, V fare or W fare on OZ (I can't remember clearly), on OZ, you only earn 70% but on M&M, you earn 100%. It really depends on OP's FFP whether it allows 100% or not.

I flew LAX-SIN on SQ last year on a redeye. Since the flights Asia are so long in duration and I wind up sleeping no matter what, the redeye doesn't bother me at all.

As for the 70%/100% EQM question, I found out that I would get 100% credited to my US account on NH even though the same fare class would only give 70% EQM to a NH account! Crazy, but true.

According to seatguru.com, the seat pitch in Economy on OZ is 34" vs. 31" on NH. That seems like a small amount, but the difference is obvious if you've tried both. Then again, when I flew SQ and NZ as a *G, I was able to get exit-row seats, so the seat pitch would not matter if exit-row seats are available to me on OZ or NH.

When did they stop giving out H2O kit? I've got mine in late FEB.

34" pitch on Asiana vs. 31" pitch on All Nippon. Everything else is about the same. There's no question, pick Asiana.

I like the redeye better. I can squeeze in a full day on both ends.

As for miles, I don't know about other fare classes, but Q fares with Asiana earn 100% miles with Asiana Club.

I've tried Y on both carriers on transpac flights.

Seat Pitch: Hands down, OZ wins at 34 inches, you can really tell the difference. However, as a *G, you might get lucky with Premium Economy on NH which would be considerably better than regular steerage on OZ.

IFE: Unless you are flying on the OZ 747 fleet, you risk flying on one of the 777s with old style PTV's. NH on the other hand has quite a nice AVOD system.

Catering: Pretty much a tie between the two, perhaps a slight advantage towards NH as they seem a bit more imaginative with their Y class menu (With OZ you always seem to have a western meal and Bibimbap) and I've consistently had reasonably tasty meals on NH.

Service: When OZ is good, they're impressive, even with Y class service, however, I've also had so-so crews, not bad by any means, but simply sloppy service, with things like infrequent water runs throughout the flight. NH oh the other hand is consistently very good. I tend to favor the consistency.

Hubs: I don't think I find many faults with Narita as a connecting point, however, Incheon is slightly more razzle dazzle with more creature comforts after a long flight. OZ has an edge here.

Bottom line: It's certainly a toss up, if space is important for you, go with OZ, if IFE or food is a priority, I'd go with NH, servicewise I don't think you'll be dissapointed with either of them.

I just noticed that the current least-expensive flights for my trip on OZ would be a "V class" and only earn me 50% of the miles to my US account. This seems odd considering that the price is $1600 -- more expensive than most other carries right now, many of whom are charging around $1100 for the same trip. NH comes in just below $1100, and I'd still get 100% of the miles. If it comes down to miles earned, I'll go with NH.

I flew twice a year thru NRT, they have never disappeared and come back, the H2O kit were never gone at all. There is a period for a month or two only has separate items, that was due to changing the packaging. I could even remember the days they were using Molton Brown, so you know how long I have been flying thru NRT.

I was there last May, June, and this past feb, all three times had the kit. That is the reason keeping me going back everytime I go thru NRT.

You are transiting NRT b/c of the shower kit?

You know.. if you like the H20+ products, you can purchase them online. @:-)

I just look at it as a bonus. However I do like to transit in NRT, it is UA and NH hub. If it is flying F, there are also loccitane kit in the NH F lounge. Wish OZ would invest something like this in their F lounge. :D

I just completed a trip on Asiana from SFO-CRK (Philippines) in economy. This was my first flight on OZ. Reading forums like this helped me choose OZ. I cannot comment on perks, but I will give a general description of my economy flight.

Seat pitch and onboard service were my two highest criteria. The 34' pitch made the flight very comfortable for me at 5'11''. The service was impeccable. The food was fantastic with choices varying to and from Incheon. You can also select special meals like all vegan, low sodium, etc. when you book the flight. The FA's gave service with a smile, and would accomodate requests anytime there wasn't turbulence, i.e. coffee, water, juice, and meals, as I saw many folks eating outside of the normal meal service times. Every hour the FA's were walking by with juice and water.

The negative: the AVOD kept rebooting on the leg from SFO to ICN every 5 minutes. Two-thirds thru the trip the problem was fixed, but it was a pita as some of the movie was missed. On the return flight we took the same plane from ICN to SFO and the AVOD was flawless. I caught 5 movies on the way back. :D

Granted, Asiana is the only airline from the US to CRK, however I would have flown to MNL if I'd desired EVA air's premium economy 38' seat pitch or $659 rt regular economy airfare. But it was worth it paying more for Asiana. If you book via a travel agent and have a long layover, Asiana may include the transit hotel as a freebie if requested. One of my four flights left 20 minutes late, but all four arrived earlier than scheduled. Another good thing is advanced seat selection.

Last May, the shower room attendant told me that they stopped giving out the shower kits.

They stopped the kits for few months. (not really stop)
When they stopped, they put each item separately and you can choose what you really need. (ie. if you only need shampoo, you pick up shampoo.)
So, they don't really stop the kits.

I go through NRT almost every month and I get them every time.

I took the NH flight in economy once, and I would never fly NH in economy for
long haul flight again.
Not only the pitch is only 31" but the seats are smaller and shorter too.
I am only 170 cm and I feel I can't fit my bum into the seat as well.
The legroom on NH:
http://pigx5.com/Photos/2007/04/20070401_LGA-ORD-NRT-TPE/images/01apr07_iad_ord_nrt_tpe11.jpg

The in flight service is good on NH but I will go for OZ for legroom since the service is almost the same.

You can see the NH meal and shower kits from this link (http://pigx5.com/Photos/2007/04/20070401_LGA-ORD-NRT-TPE/).

If I have a choice, I wouldn't want to fly NH in economy even for short haul flights, cramps as hell. I believe the only aircraft on NH get 34" in Y is 744, 77W and 763 also has 31" of legroom.

I flew on the 777-300ER in Y, LHR-NRT. I'm not sure if it was a good or bad idea to choose row 23, but it was a full flight and very crampt. This two row cubby hole area did feel a bit more private but then again I was complete stuck - I think I only managed to get out of my seat once in the entire flight!
The temperature was fairly hot too but having fallen asleep, the flight still rather surprisingly seemed to be over much sooner than I expected.

I didn't look forward to the return flight which I think may also have been pretty full.

Since OP lives in Phl, (free) shuttle service by OZ to JFK might help. Please look at the link-you would want to double check, since I am not 100% confident..

According to the website, it seems that with a shuttle coupon issued by OZ, it's free. Does anyone know how to get one in advance? By inquiring on the phone, perhaps?
