Does anyone know how I can find out how often the 737 direct ZQN-AKL gets cancelled due to bad weather over the course of the year, or to be more specific during the winter months?
I am flying ZQN-LHR via AKL and HKG with a 5 hour connection time at AKL in Aug. I really don't want to leave the day before and stay a night in AKL but equally can't not catch that pm flight out of AKL. All flight segments are on the same PNR and I am in J out of AKL.

Sorry I don't know the exact stats, certainly July & Aug would be 2 of the worst months, but it's the fog that really affects it more so than the cold and rain, so it can be Spring and Autumn/Fall that have the most trouble.
Statistics are all very well, but you'll never know until the day!! It can close in very quickly, and can re-open just as fast. You either play it safe, or take the risk. Personally, I'd fly the previous day in order to ensure I got my preferred flight and J seats to LHR. A night at the AKL Langham is always nice...

Agree. If unlucky to be caught be weather there is nothing you or anyone can do but wait for it to clear. At least flying NZ there is much less risk than flying QF/jetstar.
If you are worried then book the earliest flight (likely to be to CHC rather than AKL). Only very rarely is the airport closed all day.

Just curious...
When I was travelling regularly to SYD for work (day trips) booking the first flight out pretty much guarranteed your travel, as the first flight out was an a/c that overnighted in CBR... they could take off in much worse conditions than they could land apparently.. (which makes sense!)
Is ZQN the same??

This correct in almost everycase for a non-precision approach airport (ie no ILS)

No. A/c don't overnight there, and due to the surrounding mountains low cloud stops both arrivals and departures. In winter there is added issues (sometimes) with ice and snow.
