I think I'm the first - I apologize if this is already covered somewhere.

Check your email! For this to work, you need to be invited. Here's the (anonymized) text of my email:

-------------------------------

Dear JOSEPH STERN,

We'd like to invite you to enjoy an exclusive offer for select
American Express OPENŽ Cardmembers. You can earn double Membership Rewards points on virtually every dollar you spend over $6,500 each month from April 1 through June 30, 2009 (up to the maximum allowed).*

Membership Rewards points can help offset business expenses such as airfare to a conference, office supplies, employee gifts and more.

Enroll by May 15, 2009

Go to open.com/springbonus and enter RSVP code
XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

OR

call 1-800-794-1308 and use promo code XXXXXXXX.

Be sure to enter your Card account number ending in
XXXXX.

Many businesses earn points fast by using their Cards to pay for large purchases they already make such as advertising and marketing expenses, commercial insurance, inventory, supplies, office equipment and shipping costs.

And remember, eligible purchases on any Additional Cards linked to your Membership Rewards account can earn double points too.

Sincerely,

Rosa Sabater
Senior Vice President
American Express OPEN

So I enrolled. We'll see if I make it over the $6500, which is unlikely.

As to why I was selected for this, my best guess is my spending patterns. Years ago, I was using this card to charge over $100K/month, mostly for business stuff (when more of my vendors took ccs with no charges). Then, I moved most charges to a 1.5% cashback Chase card (now contemplating a Schwab move). So maybe they saw my spending fall off a cliff and want me back? If so, that's a few years ago, but it's all I can think of.

I had my dad who is a Business Cent holder call and ask about this promotion. The agent he talked to said she looked up a promotion for double points through the end of the year, told him that he was eligible, and went ahead and registered him. He asked several times if she was sure and she kept saying that she was positive, but of course we knew she was wrong. He asked her to make notes on the account about the promotion.

He called back and the next agent could not find the promotion, notes, or any record of the conversation.

It would be nice if they had some sort of decent database to look this stuff up in.
