Hi NZ crew,
My fiancee and I are planning our honeymoon, we're look at flying out of SYD-AKL 17 Feb & AKL-SAT (where we'll be living) 28 Feb - I'm concerned about the baggage limit as I'll really need the double allowence, issue is they won't be the same itenerary (I'll most likely book AKL-SAT through UAL), do I have ANY chance?

If they are booked on the same ticket, ie SYD-SAT with stopover in AKL, then you'll get the North American piece allowance (2 bags) instead of the weight allowance (20kgs in economy).
You can get extra allowance flying business class (1 extra piece or 10 extra kgs depending on which allowance applies), and also extra if you have *G status (1 extra piece that doesn't double up with business class extra, or 20 extra kgs that does double up with business class extra).

So basically no chance, hmmm this is an issue, wouldn't be able to book an 11 day stop over I think, and also would be booking the AKL-SAT leg on UAL. Thanks kiwi.

Do you think there would be?
How would I be able to get that worked out?

Good travel agents are worth their weight in gold. Or at least the $40 booking fee.

If you end up buying seperate tickets for SYD-AKL and AKL-Texas it will actually be AUD$10 per kilogram once you get over the 20kg limit per person (an extra 20kg if you hold *G) as you are only paying the excess for SYD-AKL. They will often overlook just a couple of kg over, depending on the check-in agent.
If you are using one ticket SYD-AKL-Texas it will be AUD$60 for each bag you are over the two bag limit. (Three bags for *G) for the flight to NZ, and then a different amount after your stopover.

Thanks guys, that's really sorted what I need to do. Can't really pack that short, she'll be over here about a month before we head to AKL and then I'm moving to SAT with her so yea, maybe a matter of shipping most of my stuff straight to SAT and just going with the one bag to AKL. heck it's my honeymoon I won't need much!
Thanks so much NZ crew, once again proving FT is very helpful to us not so frequent flyers.

Do you have *G Omnivore? If one or both of you do it really helps with the extra baggage allowance.
If not, and you buy the tix separately the allowance is:
SYD-AKL 20kg each
AKL-SAT 2 pieces each, max combined weight of the two 46kg (used to be up to 32kg each piece so some agents may well still let it through)
Ticketed together the allowance should be 2 pieces each.

I had a look at the databases I can access and see no through fares for SYD-SAT that can go through AKL as they are only published for TN, CO and NW. That said, a decent agent can combine a SYD-LAX with a LAX-SAT easily and get you the stopover in AKL you want and get the USA weight allowance for SYD-AKL.

Omnivore, what price did UAL.com offer you for the AKL-SAT one-way?
I did a quick check on ual.com and it showed US $1134 per person for AKL-SAT.
SYD-AKL-SAT as a one-way is US$1540 on QF/AA (found it on sidestep.com, bookable on aa.com), in case you'd consider those airlines. Such a ticket would give you 2 bags @ 23 kg per person for both SYD-AKL and AKL-SAT.
I also tried adding a return SAT-SYD segment to see if a return ticket would be cheaper than a one-way, but no such luck.
Using NZ/UA for SYD-AKL-SAT on one ticket is US$3100 :(
