American Express Membership Rewards - Amex Platinum pro-rated for short-term use?

I have an Amex Green charge card (business). This was a Platinum card, but with other good cards out there for free, with the recession, and with the end of the domestic companion fare program (that was the straw), I bumped it down to Green.

But now I'm going to Europe this summer with my family. Last year, we went to Europe and spent layovers in the lounges, with the Platinums. This year, we can't do that.

Can I get a Platinum a month before my trip, and then just downgrade afterward?

I'm not sure Amex will like you upgrading and then downgrading in such a short time period. You could always get one of the Citi PremierPass cards or any of the WEMC cards so you have access to all Premier Pass lounges and not the semi limited ones you get with the Plat.

If you kept your old plt card (assuming the expiration has not past-they are generally good for 3-5 years), all you need to do is so the card. I downgraded to green, but kept the actual plt card wich expires in 2011. I just show the card to enter lounge, no questions asked.

When I went to the Delta CRC's, they slid the cards in a card reader. I'm not sure about the other lounges.

It's limited to the carrier you are flying, but NW/DL are one airline now, so you should be able to use the respective lounges.

Re: swiping of the cards -- they've done that at AC for me, but since I have a UK plat card, which strictly speaking doesn't allow access -- but they still let me in, not sure what information swiping gives the lounge staff!
