I am planning to spend two weeks in Istanbul. Could anyone recommend me a cheap hotel in the center near Grand Bazar?

Lots of cheap hotels in Istanbul - but as to quality...

I can recommend this website as a source of interesting hostelries wherever you travel:
http://www.airbnb.com/travel/istanbul/tr?lng=28.975926&guests=0&precision=city&checkin=2009-04-08&state=Istanbul&location=isatnbul&checkout=2009-04-10&country=TR&city=Istanbul&lat=41.012379

I presume it has to be cheap since your off-shore banking business may be going through, er, a dip?:D

Will also be there, is the center city safe?

The tram system in IST will nake travel in the Bazaar / Sultanahmet area quite reasonable.

The real question is what do you consider cheap? Three star in the old city will be reasonable not fancy but clean. somewhere in the under 70 Euro range double. Lower is possible.

We have stayed in
Hotel Sokullu Pasha - reasonable but a bit of walk
And Hotel - good location - rooms slightly smaller but we got a amazing view.
Lonely Planet's guide is useful in this category

Safe? How late do you want to wander outisde? Taxis are fine.

Happy wandering

We were able to get a room via Expedia near the Blue Mosque for around $80 a night (much cheaper than booking direct with the hotel). But that was last Summer when the Lira was around .85 dollars. Now it is around .60 dollars so IST should be much cheaper.

But, it ain't cheap. Actually, I found it rather pricey, especially restaurants and food. Get a place that includes breakfast (most do) and fill up there.

I would not try to stay around the Bazzar. Not very residential. And, the Bazzar is right on the tram line so it is very easy to get to. Or, you can just walk from Blue Mosque/Haga Sophia area.

IST is realtively safe, but there have been stonings to death recently of "soiled" women (not in the center city). You will be okay in the tourist areas, but, exercise care about going into parks by old city walls.
