American Express Membership Rewards - Question about the UK Plat supplementary cards.View Full Version : Question about the UK Plat supplementary cards. ysb41 Mar 31, 09, 1:16 pm Hope someone can help me on this, just got my UK plat card, i hv signed the plat suppl to my wife. wondering if i can apply for a supplementary card for someone is NOT a UK resident? Thx! csdavidson Mar 31, 09, 2:29 pm Do they have the same surname as you? If so, just put the same address as yours and no questions asked. You will need a signature from them. If they don't, I'm not sure. I've had to provide council tax/HMRC forms etc for a supplementary holder that didn't have the same surname as me. Chris. ringbark Mar 31, 09, 2:44 pm I don't see why not. Be aware that AX are twitchy about new cards being used overseas, probably with good reason. trueblu Mar 31, 09, 3:07 pm When I got my plat card a couple of years ago, I asked this very question (not about plat suppl, but the other suppl card). The response was rather strange: The supp. card holder could be anybody, no need to verify ID/ residency etc, and it was perfectly OK that they live abroad. But if they live overseas, the card must be sent to my home address. It was fairly straightforward. Ironically, the two overseas people have never had to claim anything, but my wife and I have. tb RichardMannion Apr 1, 09, 6:51 am All supp cards are sent to your home address (main 'basic' cardholder). ysb41 Apr 1, 09, 11:08 am Thanks for all the replies, I am going to try, will update when i hear from Amex. thanks again to all, ^ SpeedbirdOne Apr 4, 09, 10:34 am Hello ysb41 & all, I'd like to know if your purpose for wanting to give an additional card to someone overseas is just to allow them to spend on your card, or whether it's so they can benefit from the travel insurance etc. that is offered with the Platinum? As I would like to know myself if the travel insurance with the UK Platinum would be valid for someone who lives abroad? (Has anyone asked this of Amex and what was the reply? (The reason I ask is I'm wondering if the contract would be covered by English law and therefore valid for overseas claimants, etc.) Not wanting to hijack the topic here, but it seems more appropriate to ask this here then start a brand new topic - but does anyone know if getting a supplementary Platinum or Gold card for friends and family creates a "financial link/association" on your credit file with that person? I noticed the legalese when applying for the supplementary card refers to being "jointly and severally responsible" for any charges incurred on the card. I wondered if this extended to it being considered for credit purposes a "joint" credit/debt, and whether it creates a financial link -- has anyone who's taken out supplementary cards checked their credit files and what did you find? Many thanks, Steve RichardMannion Apr 4, 09, 11:51 am Hi Steve, It applies worldwide, some of my family on my account live abroad but are covered by the insurance. They don't even need an activated card, they just need to be on the account (I have some of their cards at home, unactivated). Normal rules apply to cover, so for my mother who has a card on my account, it covers her and my dad (married partner), and any kids if they had any under 18. (21 if in FT Education). So when they fly to the UK and rent a car, they are covered which is the cover they use the most. In terms of liability, not entirely sure. I checked my credit report recently with Equifax and none of my supps were listed at all, though there was an entry for financial association by AmEx for my original main supp card holder back in 2000. I asked AmEx to remove it as the card has been cancelled for over 7 years and they agreed to do so. Hope this helps, Richard ysb41 Apr 5, 09, 7:29 am Hello ysb41 & all, I'd like to know if your purpose for wanting to give an additional card to someone overseas is just to allow them to spend on your card, or whether it's so they can benefit from the travel insurance etc. that is offered with the Platinum? Many thanks, Steve I applied the card, mainly for the insurance. hv just submitted an application for my mum, who is not UK resident, will report back if Amex aprrove the applicaiton. :) ysb41 Apr 5, 09, 7:32 am Hi Steve, It applies worldwide, some of my family on my account live abroad but are covered by the insurance. Hope this helps, Richard Thx for the reply, when apply the card for your mum, did u provide your mum's oversea address? or just tick the same address as you box, which is i hv done. does the car rental insurance only apply to the Plat Sup card, or to the gold sup card as well? :) RichardMannion Apr 5, 09, 7:37 am Same address as me. Insurance applies to any supp on your account, regardless of the card colour. ^ SpeedbirdOne Apr 5, 09, 2:47 pm It applies worldwide, some of my family on my account live abroad but are covered by the insurance. They don't even need an activated card, they just need to be on the account (I have some of their cards at home, unactivated). Thanks, Richard! This is great news, and certainly better than I would have expected! :) Normal rules apply to cover, so for my mother who has a card on my account, it covers her and my dad (married partner), and any kids if they had any under 18. (21 if in FT Education). This is excellent too ^ Though there may have been a recent change here (for the better) - I've just received my Platinum card, and in the travel insurance benefits section it's stating now that 'dependent children' upto the age of 25 are covered (and children taking a 'gap year' holiday can receive extended twelve months cover.) In terms of liability, not entirely sure. I checked my credit report recently with Equifax and none of my supps were listed at all, though there was an entry for financial association by AmEx for my original main supp card holder back in 2000. I asked AmEx to remove it as the card has been cancelled for over 7 years and they agreed to do so.Interesting. Perhaps the original link was accidental? (I seem to recall reading elsewhere that if a lender searches your credit file then someone else's straight after, it can create a link? I'm not sure if that's true, but it might explain what happened.) To be safe though, I decided to call Amex on this point. The CSR was adamant that no financial link would be created, and so in his words, if they or me go crazy and go on a big spendng spree, it'd be me they'd come after to settle the tab. :p (Part of what concerned me is that in the application forms for the supplemental cards it states that I would be "jointly and severally liable" for the balance on the cards, but combined with what the CSR told me, I think that just means they'd chase me, but if for some reason I didn't have the money and was refusing to pay, they might go chasing the supplementaries and argue that it's then upto them to then settle the debt with me.) Hope this helps, Richard It was most helpful! Many thanks Richard ^ I applied the card, mainly for the insurance. hv just submitted an application for my mum, who is not UK resident, will report back if Amex aprrove the applicaiton. :) Good luck with the application! Since Amex accepted Richard's application, it seems like you should have no problem either :) (since you were both applying for a card for someone with no credit history at your address.) laminar Apr 10, 09, 8:06 pm How about the same scenario for American Platinum cardholders wanting to give suplem cards to non US friends with no SS numbers. Any ideas? |
