Mexico - Cancun Honeymoon in October - Am I Crazy?
We had grand plans for a wonderful and near no-cost Cancun honeymoon -- points for the hotel, miles for the flights, and off-season in a relatively cheap country... But then we started reading, and everywhere I look, I see "October = hurricane season...don't go!"
:(
I can't get straight information from anywhere else, so I thought I would ask here: Are we crazy to even think of going to Cancun in the first week of October 2009? Is this really a disaster in the making, or are the warnings overblown? Have any of you been there in October, and what was it like?
Any and all thoughts are welcome... I'm kind of at the end of my rope on this one ... :(

It's your call. But it is hurricane season, and the map shows hurricanes (or tropical storms) in the Western Caribbean just about every Oct. from 2000 to 2007. That does not mean it's going to hit Cancun.
Some resorts have hurricane guarantees, so if a hurricane disrupts your vacation, you will get a replacement stay at the resort in the future.

Hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30th. That's the official season. You can get storms before or after those dates. There may also be no storms during those dates. The chances of having rain and/or a tropical depression even with no true hurricane are greater during this time.
Cancun will still be pretty hot and humid in October. But it's a great place to go.

Hot and humid, hmm. Will it be miserable outside by the pool? Will we likely get rained out?
Such a hard call... :(

Don't worry. You know what the risk is. Now just enjoy your honeymoon.

Mr Jurisdr and I were there in October 2007. It was humid outside, but not nearly as humid as it is during the Summer. It rained for a couple hours 2 of the 5 days we were there. We were at the pool one of the days when it started rained so we just used that time to eat lunch. It didn't interfere much w/our plans. If I recall correctly, there was a hurricane the week after we were there.
You're not crazy. I frequently plan vacations during hurricane season. Just keep an eye on the weather forecast. Trip insurance may be a good idea.
We were also there in early November 2008. Humidity was low and it did not rain during our stay.

We were also in the area (Playa del Carmen) the first 10 days of November last year, and for the most part found it pretty much the same way.
However, you may recall hurricane Paloma caused some concern for a while, before it veered off towards Cuba.
I researched hurricanes quite a bit before booking our trip at that time of year, and the biggest problem with the late season ones is they seem to wander around more on a less predictable track.
