Introduction

This sticky links in useful threads and external references relevant for Air NZ.

NZ can refer to the airline or the country. I have tried to clearly distinguish between the two. Air NZ refers to the whole airline group, Air NZ, Air NZ Link (Air Nelson and Eagle Air) and Mount Cook Airlines.

Older threads may have references to Freedom Air (SJ), which was a (non-*A) low cost subsidiary operating certain leisure shorthaul routes, or Zeal320, which was a holding company (*A) when Freedom Air was dissolved. These companies no longer operate - all international flights of the Air NZ group are now operated by mainline (ie Air NZ itself).

Links to FT forums and threads are shown like this (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=937693), and links to other websites are shown like this (www.airnz.co.nz).

Air NZ's airline code is NZ(!) - FT Air NZ Forum (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=440)
Air NZ is a member of Star Alliance (*A) - FT Star Alliance Forum (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=413)

Providing feedback to Air NZ

Air NZ welcomes feedback. There are a few online ways to provide feedback to Air NZ.

Submit question or feedback (http://airnz.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/airnz.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php?)
Voluntary survey about recent flight (http://www.airnzmyvoice.co.nz/) - includes free-form comments, and go into the draw for some Airpoints Dollars.
Voluntary survey about recent lounge visit (http://www.airnzmyvoice.co.nz/lounge)

If you are an Airpoints Elite member or Koru Club, you can also provide feedback by email through the elite email address.

Bookings

Hint - if travelling NZ domestically and its not included in international fare, then use the NZ website (www.airnz.co.nz) which will be cheaper than booking NZ domestic legs on an international website. The disadvantage of doing this is loss of some baggage allowance, and less protection in the event of misconnect to/from the international flight.

The Air NZ website only allows bookings on Air NZ flights and codeshares. For other itineraries you need to use other sites, or a travel agency or contact airline ticketing (service fees apply at Air NZ ticket offices).

Air NZ payment options

There is no online ability to book and hold tickets, all payment is required at time of booking. If you do not wish to pay immediately then contact Air NZ ticketing or your travel agent.

The New Zealand website (http://www.airnz.co.nz) provides a choice of paying by credit card, with Airpoints Dollars, or paying by POLi (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/manage_bookings/poli/information.htm) (limited to NZ-based bank accounts, which have internet banking enabled, and are with ANZ, ASB, BankDirect, BNZ, Kiwibank or TSB Bank).

The Australian website (http://www.airnewzealand.com.au) provides a choice of paying by credit card, with Airpoints Dollars, or paying by POLi (http://www.airnewzealand.com.au/book_online/poli/information.htm) (limited to Australian-based bank accounts, which have internet banking enabled, and are with ANZ, Bank of Queensland, Bank West, Commonwealth Bank, NAB, St George, Suncorp or Westpac). Note that from 15 September a credit card fee is charged for bookings ex-Australia (http://www.airnewzealand.com.au/aboutus/mediacentre/pressreleases/air-new-zealand-introduce-card-payment-fee-in-australia.htm), of A$3 for NZ domestic fares, A$4 for Tasman and Pacific fares, and A$10 for longhaul fares.

The other international websites provide a choice of paying by credit card or with Airpoints Dollars.

Note that bookings paid with Airpoints Dollars will still require a credit card (or POLi where available) for the tax component, except on wholly New Zealand domestic itineraries.

Carbon offsets

As with many airlines, you can buy carbon offsets at the time of purchase from the payment page, or any time (from the Air NZ Environmental Trust donation page (http://airnzenvironmenttrust.org.nz/donate/)). The choice to offset carbon useage, and the amount of offset is entirely voluntary. You can find out more on how the carbon offset is used at Air NZ Environment Trust (http://airnzenvironmenttrust.org.nz).

Air NZ booking engines

On the New Zealand site, there are several options for booking.

Flights only

Direct link to Air NZ flight search (https://flightbookings.airnewzealand.co.nz/isbook_en_NZ/book/initSearchForFlights.do)
Domestic multi-stop itineraries (https://flightbookings.airnewzealand.co.nz/isbook_en_NZ/book/initMultiCitySearchForFlights.do) (sometimes called multi-city) - this allows complex itineraries including open-jaws, multiple flights on the same day, multiple stopovers.
International multi-stop itineraries (https://flightbookings.airnewzealand.co.nz/isbook_en_NZ/book/initMultiStopSearch.do) - this allows for one-way or round-trip itineraries including open-jaw (including double open-jaw) and stopovers. It does not allow for overly complex itineraries (ie will not piece together multiple fares into a single ticket).
Grab-a-seat (http://grabaseat.co.nz)

Flights, hotels or packages

Left hand side of the homepage (http://www.airnz.co.nz)
Right hand side of the bookings page (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/manage_bookings/book_online/default.htm) (link on the menu near the top)
Right hand side of the Air NZ Holidays page (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/holidays/default.htm)
Multi-stop holiday packages (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/holidays/multistop_holiday/default.htm) - combines the international multi-stop booking engine with hotel and other add-ons, only fairly simple itineraries can be booked and only on all Air NZ itineraries (plus Aitutaki codeshare flights).

Domestic mystery breaks (http://erequest.airnz.co.nz/mystery-breaks/index.html) - where you don't know where you'll be flying to until checking in at the airport, with several options by category, budget, etc.

OLCI (On Line Check In)

OLCI is not available on Air NZ. However, all wholly domestic itineraries are automatically checked in as soon as ticketed (yes up to a year before flying). You can immediately, or at any future time, select or change seats and print out boarding passes, or have the boarding pass emailed to you (see managing your Air NZ booking below).

Managing your Air NZ booking

There are a few ways to manage your Air NZ booking, provided all of the following applies
- only Air NZ flight numbers
- on an e-ticket
- has at least one future flight
- no hotel or rental car bookings attached
- 9 or less passengers
- not booked as an international multi-stop itinerary
- booking not changed since issued (eg upgrade cleared, rerouting, etc)

You can request seats, get a copy of your ticket, print or reprint boarding passes, view bookings, and amend or cancel bookings using any of the following pages

At the lower left of the Air NZ homepage (http://www.airnz.co.nz) - requires Air NZ PNR (6 characters ending in "H") and name.
By logging in to MyAirNZ (https://myairnz.com/myairnz/portal/initViewMyKoru.do)
By retrieving your booking (https://flightbookings.airnewzealand.co.nz/isbook_en_NZ/review/initValidatePNR.do) from the manage your bookings page (link on the bookings menu near the top) - requires Air NZ PNR (6 characters ending in "H"), email address and phone number

Other travel-related bookings

Duty-free pre-orders

Duty-free (http://www.airnzdutyfree.com/) for arrival at or departure from AKL and CHC can be pre-ordered. Note prices seem to be the same as at the DFS website, but with (slightly) less selection. However, Airpoints promotions only apply at this site (not the normal DFS one).

Group and conference bookings

For group and conference bookings refer to this page (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airfares_offers/group_and_conference_travel/group_travel/default.htm) for information.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance can be added to any booking made online. Annoyingly the default (other than for domestic New Zealand itineraries) is to include travel insurance.

Single-trip insurance can also be bought from this page (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airfares_offers/travel_insurance/default.htm). There is also an option (on the same page) for annual cover for Gold Elite, Gold and Koru Club members.

Wheels

Air NZ parking at AKL (http://erequest.airnz.co.nz/airnzparking/index.htm) is available - much cheaper than the on-airport carparks, with frequent shuttles to the offsite location a few minutes drive away. No need to pre-book unless you want valet servicing and are on a tight schedule.

Rental cars (http://www.airlinerentacar.com/airnewzealand/) in New Zealand and Australia using Avis and Budget are bookable online.

Campervan rentals (http://www.airnzcampervans.com/current-deals.aspx) in New Zealand and Australia are bookable online (multiple providers).

Fare information

Fare types (ex-NZ)

:-: The fare structure changed on 1 October 2009. This section has not yet been updated. Apologies for any inconvenience. :-:

For travel within New Zealand, between New Zealand and Australia (including Norfolk Island), and travel between New Zealand and Pacific (excluding Noumea, Papeete and Hawaii), all fares are sold on a one-way half-round trip basis, and include all taxes except for fees collected at the airport. This means you can mix and match fare types - eg a more flexible fare after a meeting so you can change flights more easily and a cheaper one before the meeting, as well as combine single or double open-jaws if required while still benefiting from the ex-NZ fare (eg between New Zealand and Australia it is normally cheaper bought from NZ).

Note that for all international fares purchased with Airpoints Dollars the tax component must be paid by credit card or POLi.

Be alerted to specials

Sign up to be emailed about specials (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airfares_offers/emailoffersignup/default.htm) - works intermittently in my experience. You still need to visit Flyer Talk or the Air NZ website regularly to keep informed.

Gold Elite, Gold and Koru Club members based in New Zealand can also sign up to Hotseats by texting their airpoints number to 8282. Special elite-only deals are texted from time to time, and posted in the Koru Review offers thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/air-new-zealand-air-points/456199-koru-review-koru-club-gold-gold-elite-offers.html).

Air NZ has a number of twitter accounts that promote sales including the short-lived grab-a-seat ones. From NZ follow @flyairnz (http://www.twitter.com/flyairnz) and @grabaseat (http://www.twitter.com/grabaseat). From USA follow xxxxxx. From Australia follow xxxxxx.

How far can I go?

A nifty tool lets you see how far you can go (http://promos.airnz.co.nz/howfar/) for a given $ amount (or number of Airpoints Dollars), based on current fares, from the 5 main cities in New Zealand. Note there is no check on availability.

Online price guarantee

Air NZ promises that the lowest fares (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airfares_offers/bestonlinepriceguarantee.htm) on their domestic, Tasman and Pacific (excluding Tahiti, Noumea & Hawaii) flights are found on their website (http://www.airnz.co.nz). If you have a valid claim (see the link for terms) then you'll get back the fare difference + NZ$10 (or 10 Airpoints Dollars for fares paid with them).

Taxes and fees

Air NZ does have fuel surcharges. These are incorporated into the base fare for paid tickets ex-NZ.

For Airpoints Dollars bookings, all domestic taxes and fees other than those collected at airport are paid with Airpoints Dollars but international taxes and fees (other than those collected at airport) are paid by credit card or POLi.

New Zealand airport departure fees

Some airports in New Zealand charge departure & arrival fees as follows.

Air NZ sales

Grab-a-seat (GAS)

Each day sales on a handful of selected routes and dates are made available on the New Zealand site. Almost all sales are domestic. Sometimes Australia, South Pacific, or, more rarely, longhaul are included. Sales normally are released early morning NZ time, but some routes may be released mid or late morning, or even in the afternoon.

Air NZ daily grab-a-seat sales ex-NZ thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=579826) and grab-a-seat ex-NZ webpage (http://flightbookings.airnewzealand.co.nz/vgrabview/). There is a summary of GAS longhaul offers & key dates (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=10444656).

You can also follow @grabaseat (http://www.twitter.com/grabaseat) on twitter.

GAS Weekender, fares + accommodation for domestic travel, are available each Wednesday for the upcoming weekend. Found on the grab-a-seat ex-NZ webpage (http://flightbookings.airnewzealand.co.nz/vgrabview/), right hand side.

From time to time GAS is also available ex-Australia. These are almost always for travel to NZ only.

Air NZ daily grab-a-seat sales ex-Oz thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=709755) and grab-a-seat ex-Oz webpage (http://flightbookings.airnewzealand.com.au/vgrabview/?storefront=AU)

You can now subscribe to a GAS email alert, login on the GAS page to subscribe to the email. There are also a number of independent GAS alert sites which can be found through Google.

GAS fares are non-mileage earning on all programs, however they do earn Airpoints Status Points (if not paid with airpoints dollars).

$1 reserve auctions

Every Thursday Air NZ launches a number of $1 reserve auctions for specific itineraries (exact flights), ex-NZ only. A range of destinations are used, mostly longhaul. Origins vary around the country and the domestic legs can be dropped to start from Auckland instead. Each individual auction runs for 24 hours. Duration of stopover varies but generally 1-2 weeks. All travel classes are included, and the number of people also varies.

$1 auction website (Sella) (http://www.sella.co.nz/store/4m59l6/grabaseat-air-new-zealand/)

$1 reserve auction fares are non-mileage earning on all programs.

Flight blackboard

Economy class sale fares are almost always non-mileage earning on all programs, however they do earn Airpoints Status Points (if not paid with airpoints dollars). Premium economy and business class sale fares almost always earn miles at normal rates for business class. YMMV - check the fine print.

Holiday blackboard

TIP some holiday fares provide free or nearly free accommodation.

Economy class sale fares are almost always non-mileage earning on all programs, however they do earn Airpoints Status Points (if not paid with airpoints dollars). Premium economy and business class sale fares almost always earn miles at normal rates for business class. YMMV - check the fine print.

Air NZ Airpoints promotions

Airpoints are not very good at publicising promotions. While some may be emailed, and others mentioned in Koru Review (sent to Gold Elite, Gold and Koru Club members), others are only mentioned on the website.

Airpoints news (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/airpoints_news/default.htm) sometimes has promotions, but Airpoints partner offers (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/partner_offers/default.htm) is a better place to check (and the 3 linked pages for retail, hotel and rental car offers).

What can I expect flying Air NZ?

Pre-flight

Assuming you booked on an Air NZ website you will be emailed the e-ticket immediately. If the itinerary is domestic only then you will also have an opportunity to select seats and check in straight away.

To manage your booking (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/air-new-zealand-air-points/937693-air-new-zealand-master-thread-2009-edition.html#post11493840), you will most likely need your Air NZ PNR (passenger name reference). This is a 6 character code that always ends in H. Since Air NZ uses their own CRS (called Carina) you cannot use such online sites as checkmytrip (www.checkmytrip.com) or viewtrip (www.viewtrip.com) to look up your bookings. The only way is through the Air NZ website.

The Air NZ website has a page with generalised advice for international travellers (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/before-you-fly/international-travel/default.htm). There are separate pages with specific information on New Zealand entry requirements (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/before-you-fly/international-travel/entering-nz.htm) and USA entry and transit requirements (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/before-you-fly/international-travel/entering-usa.htm) (this includes all passengers flying directly between London and Auckland (via Los Angeles).

Baggage rules

:-: From 1 October some minor changes to the rules, and introduction of bag drop on regional domestic flights. :-:

Checked baggage allowances vary according to itinerary, class of travel and Star Alliance status. Free baggage allowances can be pooled between those travelling together. If checking in with another airline to connect to an Air New Zealand flight, or in some circumstances if connecting from an Air New Zealand flight to another flight on a different airline, then other baggage allowances and rules may apply.

Air New Zealand checked baggage allowances (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/before-you-fly/baggage/checked-in-baggage.htm) are summarised as follows.

Domestic only itinerary (piece allowance)

Economy - 1 bag to a maximum weight of 25kg
Star Alliance Gold and Koru Club - 2 bags each to a maximum weight of 25kg

International itinerary including domestic connecting flights, no travel to or through North America or Tahiti (weight allowance)

Economy - 20kg total weight
Premium economy - 30kg total weight
Business - 30kg total weight
Star Alliance Gold - as above plus 20kg

International itinerary including domestic connecting flights, with travel to or through North America or Tahiti (piece allowance)

Economy - 2 bags each to a maximum weight of 32kg and maximum total weight 46kg

Excess baggage charges vary enormously. You can find costs on Air New Zealand excess baggage charges (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/before-you-fly/baggage/excess-baggage/default.htm) page and selecting the country you will be checking you bags in from the pull-down at the top.

Special rules apply to sporting equipment and oversized items (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/before-you-fly/baggage/oversized-items.htm).

Baggage issues

For items left onboard refer the relevant baggage services office (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/before-you-fly/baggage/baggage-services-offices.htm). For items left at the airport (eg check in, lounge or gate) contact the airport.

For delayed, lost or damaged bags, refer information page (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/before-you-fly/baggage/mishandled-baggage.htm).

Boarding passes

For domestic only itineraries there are several ways to get a boarding pass.

online check in (OLCI) pdf - this is emailed to the input address
at the airport using the self-check in kiosk
at check in counter - for anyone at regional airports, elites at main cities, connecting international passengers at main cities, passengers for whom kiosk may be difficult to use, passengers with service issues
mpass (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/manage_bookings/mpass/default.htm) - pxt sent to NZ-based mobile phone
epass - strictly not a boarding pass but the RFID tag fulfils the same function as one, given to NZ-based Gold Elite, Gold and Koru Club members

For international itineraries the only way to get a boarding pass is at the airport check in counter. Air NZ advises that kiosks will be available for Trans-Tasman flights within the next year or two. Passengers who were issued a boarding pass by another airline and are connecting to an international Air NZ flight will need to get the boarding pass reissued. This can be done at any airport check in desk, at airside transfer desk (some airports), at Air NZ lounge (some airports), or at the gate. Some boarding passes issued by Air NZ at regional centres (ie the skinny boarding passes) cannot be used on international flights and will need to be reissued.

The barcode on the boarding pass can be used to gain access to the lounge (if you are eligible) or board your flight for wholly domestic itineraries.
