I have now had experience with both programs and have the following observations.
Both currently have a 20,000 bonus point promotion (I have maxed out both) however, I can do more with the 20,000 Hyatt points than with Radisson. I did not realize that the Hyatt hotels range from 5,000-18,000 points per night. The 18,000 point hotels like the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendome and the Park Hyatt Tokyo are often over $1,000 per night.
The value of the points at Radisson are as stated, worth less than Hyatt: a good example being that I am redeeming around 60,000 Goldpoints for a four night 1/2 point stay at the Radisson Lima. This required maxing out two promotions to get a $600 four night stay.
At Hyatt I can redeem awards at a more reasonable base amount and just earn the required amount needed. This is done fast as points are earned on total room charges, not just (as with Radisson) your room rate. Also all Diamonds can chose the 1,000 points (500 for Hyatt Place) for their Diamond gift. Thus five stays and you have a minimum of a cat 1 or 2 hotel free night (cat 1 =5,000, cat 2 = 8,000). The majority of mainline Hyatt/Hyatt Place are in those two point levels. What can you get in a 15,000 point Radisson?
The 50% Gold Elite bonus is better with Radisson (Hyatt Diamond is 30%) however the extra points get you little. The 500 online bonus and the 1,000 online check in promo is great but sadly gets you little.
Radissons are good value for what is often spent (in Florida) however, often Hyatt properties are very competitive as well as having great bonus point promotions. As well often Hyatt Place is very close to the price of Country Inn. However the Hyatt Place is MUCH better, with 40 inch flat plasma TVs in every room. Their lobby is like a Starbucks, they are so cool. Now as a gold elite I do get suite upgrades at Country Inn, however I still like the Hyatt Place better as well as a free drink coupons that Diamond are given.
It’s a hard deal with how things are in this economy; we all want a good value for what we spend. Between the two programs, even though Radisson is often much less than Hyatt’s (though not always) the extra benefits given and earned under the Gold Passport program, makes it the better deal. I want points that are useful, not just plentiful.
I would be curious on the thoughts on this and other differences you all have seen.;)
