Hi all,
Looking for sugetsions on flying to Myanmar from Austin, Tx (November 09 for 1 month). Have checked Singapore , Malaysian airlines and nothing that makes me want to jump on a ticket. I was not really that interested in flying into BKK and using Asia air. It does have good deals but just not that interested in being in BKK as we have already been a couple of times. Any thoghts or suggestions on routes would be appreciate.

Personally I do not want to visit Burma while authoritarian rule continues, especially given that most tourism businesses funnel your cash directly into the pockets of the military junta who continue to abuse human rights.

However if you still really wanted to support evil-doers, Thai air offer some fairly affordable flights there via Bangkok for around the US$850 mark (but short connections - BKK is very easy to transit these days TG-TG) from London, and there are a huge number of cheap ways of getting to LHR from all over the US given the economic position of both the US and UK. Cheap flights to Rangoon + freeish stopover in London = nice.

Being a US citizen I have had the opportunity to supoport evil doers with my tax dollars on a daily basis for many years now. I feel fairly well educated on the pros and cons of travel in Myanmar and obviously am choosing to go.

Thanks for the routing advice.

I flew in on Air Asia last year, and flew out on Bangkok Air. This was the easiest way, to fly into BKK and go with low-costs into RGN.

Air Asia was great on the route, cheap, on time, its only an hour flight, so no issues at all. Bangkok Air was equally great, but twice the price
I think Jetstar or Silk Air also flew from Singapore at the time.

Do not bother buying internal air tickets before you get into the country, but they must be paid for in US dollars. Bring lots of smaller bills into the country.
Keep in mind if you exchange 100 USD, you end up with a huge stack of 1000 kyat notes :)

Do NOT exchange money at the airport, its half the rate you will get inside the country. Any taxi will take USD.

As for the evil-doers comment... well... avoid organized tours, stay at local guesthouses, minimize your spending that goes to the government...

Burma is a fantastic country with wonderful people, and lots to see and do, you will love your trip. :)

I think it'll be hard to beat the gateway+LCC approach, since not many global airlines can put it all on one ticket and those that can probably want a real premium. JetStar from SIN-RGN might be an idea. I liked the assigned seating and 20kg on bags on JetStar better than chaotic Air Asia, even though JetStar is usually more expensive.
