In a nutshell.

Been waiting 6 weeks and still no closer to obtaining a card. Have sent countless documents. Each time I speak to them on the phone I ask them if this is all and they say yes, until the following week.

They looked up my employer in the phone book to see if they exist. They don't exist in the white pages as we don't trade.
They disputed my title, I am a shareholder and I said my job is admin, they keep saying my letter must say director since I make decisions for the business.
They said if u don't have AUS income you can't get one, even if you now live in AUS, retired and worth $50 million you can't get one.
You tell them something, 5 mins later they need you to explain it again. Such as why my employment letter does not start before Marc, reason being for SA tax purposes. They just can't comprehend it.

Argh.

I mean debating with me a job title and looking up a business in the phone book to see if it exists.

I understand how you feel! I have an NZ Amex and the service I receive from the conceirge (there's 2 of them now) and from Travel is excellent and between what I get from them I happily pay my annual fee. However the credit department is based in Oz and is worse than hopeless.

The first time I rang them was for an additional card form for Plat charge card. First form they sent was NZ Plat CC form, 2nd was Oz Plat Charge Card then Oz Plat CC then NZ Plat CC again! Eventually got the right one but took well over a month to sort out.

Have had repeated similar issues since then eg account reviews when I'm overseas and just plain rude service or the wrong information been given out.

No defence of Amex Australia as I have had my own recent amusement with them (fortunately resolved in my favour), but you can download the documents required for both AU/NZ online from the respective websites.

So you don't want them to verify any of the details that you've provided? I would expect that they would do so. Otherwise I could claim to be a billionaire and expect that they would extend me credit and they'd have no way of knowing whether I was telling the truth or not. Sucks that you've been given the run around a bit, but I do not fault AmEx for wanting to verify "little" things like employer.
