American Express Membership Rewards - Double points for gas and groceries returns, registration required

For those that might have steered some of their plastic spend to other cards because of recent changes, there's good news that double MR points returns for consumer cards with gas and grocery purchases -- the rest of the year. Like the airline and hotel promos going on right now, you must register to earn these bonuses:
www.americanexpress.com/counttwice or call 1-800-794-1308 and use the promotional code 139150001.

Hope this helps some of you.

Thanks Randy!

Given the stupid, unjustified, computer-generated letter I just got from Amex, this helps ease the frustration and bitterness. Not that I am not troubled by the randomness of their decisions which have been directed at me and at many others who post here at FT.

Thanks much, Randy! I never would have stumbled on this, but these bonus points will be much appreciated.

Also, why is it that every special American Express page looks like a phishing attempt? They always redirect to crazy addresses, use things like badly-pixellated graphics, and have little brand consistency from page to page.

Thanks for sharing.

Interestingly it is only for the charge card products (my Blue linked to my MR account is not eligible) and only for personal cards (my Open/Biz card is not eligible). Still, a nice bonus for those who have a card that is eligible and a nice long term for the promotion.

It does max at 1000 bonus points per month.

My guess is that charge cards qualify, credit cards don't. Also maybe not corporate cards.

What card were you trying to register?

If you register online, you do so by web login and not by card. Once you enter your web login credentials, it tells you which of your cards, if any, are eligible.

Randy,

What hotel and airline promos are going on right now for the membership rewards program as far as point earnings are concerned. I'm aware of the 20% bonus for transfers to Delta but are their double points promos on purchases of airline tickets and hotels. If so I would love the link to see if I am eligible. I registered for the below promotion and might take advantage of it but I still have other cards that offer a better return.

For those that might have steered some of their plastic spend to other cards because of recent changes, there's good news that double MR points returns for consumer cards with gas and grocery purchases -- the rest of the year. I got this same message when trying to register my Centurion card.

You have to make sure it is the PERSONAL Centurion card. Apparantly, the Business Centurion is a JOKE! I cancelled mine becuz to lack of benefits, no promotional gifts, etc.

I successfully enrolled the Personal Centurion card!!

Thank you OP, I was able to enroll also. One question, the T&C say:

This offer is valid on up to $1000 of eligible gas and grocery spend each month.

Does this mean you are thus eligible for up to 2,000 points per month or, just the 1,000?
Thanks.

I believe you would receive 1000 bonus points for your first $1000 of spending in any month and then any spending above $1000 that month would not get you any bonus.

Thanks for the info. I just wish they'd extend it again to the Delta Platinum AMX card. I hate to have to remember to switch back and forth between cards in order to maximize miles (points), while at the same time attempting to reach certain spending levels on the Delta card in order to achieve "elite status."

Anyone know if this can be stacked with 2X points for 1 yr promo? T&C's say not valid with any other offer. The extra 1k points/month would be nice, but not at the chance of risking double points.

What would be the diff in charging stuff to your platinum as apposed to your SPG?

I think not as good, with the bonus, the plat card would be $1000=666 spg points, while the SPG card would be $1000 = 1000 spg points. If you are spending for an transfer that is not to another branded Amex card product (spg, hilton) then it is worthwhile.

I think most groceries places will work if it is like a safeway, raleys, type of place..One that is individual and not like a super walmart or super target

correct me if i am wrong..same goes for gas

I registered with my card number for this promotion (I am the primary cardholder). Will additional cardholders under my account need to register separately, or does my registering take care of the additional cards earning the bonus points as well?

Thanks

So, what did Amex say when you called and asked them about this? Wouldn't that be the shortest path to solving the mystery?

I guess additional cardmembers enrolled automatically. I just called to enroll my wife's card (she is the additional cardmember on my account) and the system said that account is already enrolled.

We’re sorry. This account is not eligible for this promotion.

Wouldn't accept for my corporate Plat Amex. The DL and HHonors cards already have double gas/groceries ^

Use my Chase rewards on Gas/Groceries though. 5% cashback is hard to beat with MR or airline points. :D
