Hawaii-based Airlines - WARNING - New Mileage Expiration Policy for Hawaiian Air (Effective 6/1/2009)

Hawaiian Air is changing their policy from 36 months to 18 months effective June 1. If you have not had any activity between November 30, 2007 and May 31, 2009, your miles will expire on June 1. If you have had activity during that period, then your miles will expire 18 months from the last date of activity.

Also be aware that if you plan on earning miles between now and June 1, (say by purchasing something at OfficeDepot.com or flowers at ftd.com for example), the miles must be posted to your account by May 31, or your account will be wiped out. So don't wait until the last minute to try to keep your account active.

Thanks for posting this, just saw the notification which was buried in the monthly newsletter. I can't find online where my last activity date was, but I know by memory it was around end of Oct 2007 so I'll have to do something by the end of May. Like other threads I've read, it may be helpful to list some ways we can reset the clock cheaply if we don't plan to fly. Easiest/cheapest way I've found so far is to purchase one iTunes song from the HawaiianMiles Mall - 2 miles/dollar earned, or similar transaction from the Mall would work as well. I'll be buying an iTunes song so will post back with how long it took to post the miles for those that are interested.

Thanks for that suggestion. I wasn't aware of that option. I had been planning to transfer AmEx MR points into my HA account, but the itunes purchase will work just as well.

HawaiianMiles' mileage expiration policy will change effective June 1, 2009. To keep all earned miles from expiring, you now must have mileage earning or redemption activity once every eighteen (18) months. The first day miles will expire under this new policy is on June 1, 2009 if no miles were earned or redeemed during the period of November 30, 2007 – May 31, 2009 or prior to November 30, 2007.

Used to be that only earnings counted. Now redemptions count too.

Thanks for the heads up, I did the iTunes song purchase for me and my partner. I've never purchased anything through the mall, I'm curious, how do they track the purchases. It didn't appear to have anything special when I went to iTunes, just my normal account info. Is HA tracking my click through activity from the mall website?

I think it's some kind of cookie, I'm not sure though.. have always wondered that myself.

I purchased one iTunes song on 3/30, checked my HA account and it showed the credit as activity date of 4/2 and posting date as 4/16, so took a little over two weeks, not too bad.. just an FYI for those out there that need to do this. Another option would be transferring miles from a SPG account, too.

Is the HawaiianMiles newsletter announcing this change available on-line? I see that the disclaimer on the on-line mileage statement has been changed to reflect the 18-month expiration, but the Hawaiian Miles Terms and Conditions still shows the 36-month expiration timeframes under it Conditions of Membership #5.

I would hope that Hawaiian Air would notify it's members of this significant change in the program via e-mail.

another option, if you live on Oahu, is to shop at Star Market grocery stores.
any purchase of $2 or more earns you 1 mile if you give them your miles #.

save your receipt until it gets credited and you have 120 days to report a discrepency.
