Yes, I've searched..... No, I didn't get any current answers.... So here goes....
I'm going to be staying at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit (Bangkok, Thailand) for five nights next month :p . I have reserved a "Grand Deluxe" room with breakfast and free internet, etc.... My questions are:
1) It says I get cocktails in the lounge in the evening. Is this the "Executive Lounge", 'cuz I haven't seen anything about any "Executive" rooms. Is "Grand Deluxe" a fancy name for the Executive floors? Do they serve appetizers during the cocktail hours?
2) If I used the "virtual" 50% off offer (using 1,000 SPG points for the stay), will I still get SPG points for the stay?
3) Is there a chance that I'll get a room upgrade if I'm only SPG Gold? What would be the next level of room (above Grand Deluxe), anyway?
4) Since it's my first time in BKK, and at the SGS, anybody have any room recommendations (which floor to ask for, which direction to face, etc.)?
Thanks All! ^

"1) It says I get cocktails in the lounge in the evening."
Unlike the Westin or the Royal Orchid Sheraton, the SGS does not have a dedicated Executive Lounge. Rather, the drinks are served at the Library on the second floor or at the adjacent bar. During the appointed hours you may drink as you wish.
I have not seen any appetizers, other than the usual tray of nuts that accompanies each drink.
3) Is there a chance that I'll get a room upgrade if I'm only SPG Gold? What would be the next level of room (above Grand Deluxe), anyway?
Not having stayed at the SGS as a Gold member, I can't comment on the upgrade possibilities, but it is interesting to see how many SPG Floors are listed on the elevator button panel. It accounts for more than half the floors!
"4) Since it's my first time in BKK, and at the SGS, anybody have any room recommendations (which floor to ask for, which direction to face, etc.)?"
South facing rooms away from the street side of the hotel are quieter and sunnier than those facing the street. The SkyTrain itself, which is elevated over the street, is quiet.
Suites, if offered, are nice. The Presidential and Grand Suites are spacious and come with butler service who proffers on demand coffee/tea/cookies and other services, such as unpacking/packing, etc.
Enjoy your stay!

As far as desired rooms I find rooms ending with 02(Suite) 04,06,08 overlook the pool area and most quiet, also being a bit further away from elevator. Also even as a Gold you will recieve 3 pieces of free laundry for you stay as well coffee/tea hot or iced anytime complimentry.

That was my experience too until last week! However a couple of days ago, besides the assorted nuts/pretzels etc, they were also serving (small) plates with dimsum and prawn spring rolls etc. There were 3 assorted pieces on a plate. I did ask for a 2nd plate and there was no problem whatsoever.
The Chilean Merlot was quite nice too! :)

I stayed at the SGS a couple of weeks ago, and as gold got upgraded to Grand Deluxe (no suite), 31st floor facing the street. No noise whatsoever from the street. I especially enjoyed the spa, and the hotel staff were generally helpful.
I think that the hotel may be understaffed a bit: on 2 occasions it took a looong time for a room service tray/trolley to be removed, and I had to call for housekeeping to make up the room when I returned one day at 3pm (after having been out all day). The street-level restaurant was nearly empty most of the time I passed by, though the lobby-level buffet restaurant had plenty of customers and was pretty good for what it did.
I don't especially like the pedestrian entrance to the hotel -- it feels as if you're coming in through a back entrance somewhere -- but the location of the hotel is very good.
Overall, though, I find that the SGS charges about the same as either the InterContinental or Grand Hyatt, but that the latter two are better places to stay based on service and location.

The SGS has the BEST IMHO Breakkie Buffet going. expecially the exotic fruit jams...
The pool is cool too, no good for laps, but wonderful to hang out, etc... see the pics on their website.

Not sure if anyone answered your question about recieving credit using the SPG 50 cert. This is a valid rate and you should be recieving both stay, night and Starpoint credit while using this rate. Some hotels think of it as a discounted rate and do not credit member's accounts.
Hope you enjoy your trip! ^

You're welcome!
Since the hotel levies a 10% service charge (in addition to tax), I reckon that a smile and a thank you (in Thai) should take care of things.
If time permits, check out the fabulous Sheraton Pattaya! I've been meaning to write a trip report as it was an enjoyable hotel stay.

For the first time in 5 years I will be staying in Bangkok as a Gold SPG instead of Platinum (Thanks to Starwood for having NO property choices in Austin. ) and have a question about the breakfast buffett.
I have stayed at both the Westin and SGS in Bangkok in the past and like them both. I prefer the beds at the Westin, and the fact that it was a Cat 2 compared to a Cat 3 at the SGS. Now they are both Cat 3, so that changes my outlook a bit.
My main question centers around the breakfast. I have always stayed at the SGS on points and always as a Plt. This time I will still be staying on points but as a Gold. Breakfast has always been included, but I don't know if that was because it is included in the points rate or if they gave it to me because I was PLT. If so, do they also include it for Gold members?
I've searched the million BKK SPG threads but saw no mention of the buffet being included, only mentions of how great it was (which I agree.)
I do have one other question that was not answered. Does anyone know if wireless internet is free in rooms at the SGS? I read that on one of the threads, but the person wasn't sure if it was true. I know it costs $15+ per day at the Westin.

I have stayed at the SGS as Gold, no complimentary breakfast.
If I were you, I would save my points and go for one of the Cat 2 options in BKK or pay cash to stay at a non-Starwood hotel. IMO the SGS is the most overated hotel on FT.

I was there last week as a gold. Breakfast is not included.
If you book a grand deluxe room, you get free internet and breakfast otherwise you'll need to pay for both.
For an award stay as a gold you'll get your room upgrade to a nice view/high floor and that's about all. The breakfast was good but not as god as I remembered.

Could you pay 1,000 points per day and upgrade your room to a grand deluxe? I know a lot of people use this upgrade at the westin for exec floor access and seems like a pretty good deal.
brj8826
Mar 25, 06, 2:22 pm
mcgahat, you probably could do that. I think that must have been what happened as a PLT, they upgraded my room to a Grand Deluxe and the breakfast was included. Never had the pleasure of using the internet so I didn't have a chance to try that.
I just checked the prices online and for my stay the Grand Deluxe room is only $10 more per night than the regular room. I wonder if they would let me pay the $10 on top of an award rather than using the 1,000 points? It seems like hotels in Asia have alot more leeway on those type of things.
Thanks again SPG for not having a hotel in Austin!

Can't find a dedicated SGS thread so I'll post my experience here.
Anyway, I just came back from a 3N stay as a Corporate Preferred (more or less equivalent to Gold I think). I booked 2 rooms - one for myself, wife and baby, and the other for my parents.
We took an AOT limo from the airport, that's available at the counter just before the exit - I felt it'd be better than having to deal with touts or ending up with a small cab with an even smaller boot (some taxis have an NGV tank in the boot).
Still we were "temporarily" passed to a tour operator which claimed they had a promo with AOT and offered FREE tours - transportation and local tour guide but excluding tickets. All we had to pay were B$100 each as government tax. We passed on this.
I opted for a London cab (yeah, a London cab in Bangkok ) since there were 4 of us and paid B$1,200 for the 40 minutes ride to SGS on a weekday afternoon.
Both Executive Deluxe rooms were upgraded to an SPG floor, which was on a higher level and faced the swimming pool/lake at the back. We were also provided butler service (only for getting coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk, etc.), 3 pieces of laundry and late checkout.
I was given the option to add breakfast for two and a 25-minute massage/spa treatment for B$2,500/room/day which I promptly declined since there were better options outside. Instant Awards redemption is also available at a rate of 750 Starpoints for US$10.
My room came with a baby crib and toiletries. My parents' room came with a suprise "35th Wedding Anniversary" cake, which provided a fine start to the holiday.
Overall, service was good (except for the late housekeeping) and we were very happy with the room - it was big (bathroom too), and looked relatively new and luxurious. The swimming pool was unfortunately quite small and we didn't use it or the other facilities. There was a note from the GM that the restaurant, business centre, fitness centre and spa now had shorter opening hours due to the economic downturn.
The covered bridge to Asok BTS and nearby Sukhumvit MRT was very convenient since we had a baby with us. There are 2 shopping malls - Times Square next door and Robinsons across the road, which had a supermarket and 24-hour McDonald's downstairs so we didn't need to worry about breakfast.
Another hotel I noticed with a great location is the Intercontinental (or Holiday Inn next to it), where it's in a big shopping zone around Siam Paragon, Central World and MBK.
If you're a "weekend bachelor" looking for some action, the whole stretch across the road from Soi Cowboy to Nana Plaza has a variety of live shows, pubs and friendly local girls to keep you company. Do avoid the elephants!
On our return journey, I asked the concierge to book me an AOT minivan this time and for the same price of B$1,200. Since it was Sunday, we took about 30 minutes and btw, you should plan to arrive early because the airport is extremely busy.
At B$4,000/room/night (average rate after the free night offer) and the 1,500 pts/night bonus from the NAN promo, it's definitely good value.

First larrylim, welcome to FT in case nobody has welcomed you yet.
Second, I don't quite understand that area of your post. I don't know what an executive deluxe room is but if you mean grande deluxe then you should had the ability toe have breakfast downstairs at the hotel already especially since you mention butler and laundry service which are benefit of grande deluxe rooms which should also include breakfast.

Downstairs or at the Pool (which is my favorite)... I find the breakfast by the pool, while simple, compared to the breakfast upstairs, a very relaxing experience.

I booked an Executive Deluxe. A Grande Deluxe is essentially the same room, but with butler, breakfast and Internet access. As Corporate Preferred, I was only given a butler.
Anyway, it's a strange way of doing things. Because in my stay details at spg.com, it clearly stated a full Grande Deluxe package but the frontdesk assured me that it was not the case.

Very interesting but then again these hotels have a ton of different rate plans and I don't know how they keep them all straight. Just weird seeing that you had butler and laundry but no breakfast.

While a taxi to SGS should be 400 baht maximum (usually closer to 300) and the taxi's are in relatively good condition, larrylim would almost definitely have needed 2 taxis for him, his wife, his baby, his parents and the luggage.
In general, using the various taxi services at the BKK airport is never a good economic choice. However, things that are too expensive in Thailand tend to be not so much money. In this case, paying $12-$15 extra to share the car and not split up the family is a decision that many people would make. Also, the airport is a bit chaotic with many people offering you a taxi ride and no one letting you know exactly where to go to get the official taxis.
I think as a traveler to Thailand, people should know that the taxi situation in BKK is pretty reliable and economical. People's antennae for being ripped off need to be raised while in Thailand, but if you get to the right taxi line that fear can be delayed until the next encounter with a Thai person who takes an interest in helping you.

Actually, A very good point about two taxis. Last trip my wife and I took a regular taxi and barely had enough room for us and our bags and we did not really have a lot of bags so if we had four people and bags no way one would have worked.

Wow, 1200 THB = 'robbed' :o
Traveling with my wife and luggage, and after a long day-plus of travel, I like to have someone meeting me with a nice spacious clean car. So I'll pre-arrange to have a car meeting me, and it'll run about 1200 THB. And I'm more than happy to pay that over grabbing a cab.
Now if we want to stay on topic, then how about 'what does SGS charge for transfers?'

Or sometimes it's six pieces per stay...
I've been told 3 pieces many times. One time they said six and then tried to charge me for 3, they removed this charge after some discussion. The next time it was back to three. Last time we went it was back to 6 and were sure to clarify this carefully at the time of checking in. No additional charges were forthcoming.

Do you guys always book the cheapest rate at the SGS?
As a Platinum at the cheapest paid room rate, how many times have you ended up without an upgrade at all?
Without a room upgrade, are the above list of benefits considered "Platinum Benefits", or "Grande Deluxe" benefits--only available with the upgrade?
I'm concerned that, with them having possibly closed 10+ floors due to the turndown, there is less chance of upgrade.
Any thoughts?

i was just there and i believe they have opened up most if not all of the floors. as to the platinum benefits they include breakfast, cocktails and free internet. imho the only difference between a regular room and the grande deluxe room is the benefits and not a bigger room (i believe all non suites are pretty much the same room just some have a better view and are on spg floors). the upgraded room is to a suite,.

My last stay they did not have a suite upon check in but the front desk person said they would have one the following day and ask what time I would be outside my room and they would move all our stuff to the suite. Next day, stopped at front desk and got new keys to our suite and all our stuff was in same position as we left it in the previous room. That is service.

For those of you that have breakfast either via your rate or via being a Grande Deluxe room guest and leaving the hotel before breakfast starts in the restaurant......
They will have breakfast boxes waiting for you when you check out. The breakfast boxes have a container of fruit, a bag of pastries, a container with cheese sandwiches, a container of muesli, coffee and orange juice. Just let them know the evening before if you need this service.
I know of no other hotel that does this. My wife tells me it is rude to eat in a taxi but I would suggest at least having the coffee in the taxi as it will probably be cold by the time you get to the airport.

I'm at the SGS now, on the 2nd night of a 6-night Z6H stay (buy 4, get 2 free).
Thanks Holtju2, for recommending this hotel--it really sets itself far apart from most hotels in BKK, even SPG properties around the world--in treatment of Plats especially. My recommendation? If you can get even a competitive rate for this hotel, and you're an SPG Plat, book it!
Here is the experience so far:
Checked in at 130AM, brought to my room, a "Grande Suite"--2 full rooms, I do see on FT that some don't like the layout because it's essentially 2 rooms, with 2 full baths, one has a bed and the other a couch--but I kinda like having one room to do work/internet/entertain in, and the other to sleep/change clothes in.
Breakfast in the restaurant this morning--I think the poolside one is closed on weekdays, but to be honest it's not so busy now--about 30% full at breakfast at 10AM, usually a busy time. Made-to-order waffles, excellent baked goods (they actually use butter--not those damn Japanese-style muffins!), decent service. Cut-to-order fruit--but they ran out of Mango. Isn't it mango season? Maybe not quite yet......
My 3 pcs of laundry per the Plat benefit, given this morning at 9AM, came tonight at 530pm, nicely done.
Wake-up call came with coffee a few minutes after my wake-up call. I really LOVE to start my day with good coffee.
Went to the gym. A bit small but NEW cardio equipment--all LifeFitness brand, which is excellent, with personal TVs and headphones attached. Friendly, unobtrusive service.
Right now I'm sitting at the Living Room, the 1st-floor bar, surfing the net using the free WiFi provided for Plats, enjoying a Mango Margarita and the live, 3-piece jazz ensemble. Every few minutes, the SkyTrain whizzes past just outside the window. Actually VERY cool, a great vibe-about 50% of the tables are full, several people single and just reading or using their laptops. I will try BarSu later this week, but actually this is hard to beat!
Since I'm kinda tired, (usually I don't eat in hotels!) I will partake in the 30% off this month promotion at Basil, the Thai restaurant here which is "award-winning", though of course who knows what that means. Prices are reasonable for a hotel restaurant anyway--about 300++ for main dishes, so with the discount it seems a good deal, and an easy way to spend the evening in, and get off the jetlag train!
The only complaint? And this happened at the Westin Kuala Lumpur, too: The welcome letter addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Kyushuman." Umm.... how can I say this politely--"Mrs. Kyushuman" could only exist if I lived in Canada, the Netherlands, or a few more socially liberal countries in Europe!

Agree with you 100% kyushuman. Best treatment of plats I've had.
BarSu wasn't crowded when I went there, but the bartenders are great.
They make a pretty good Pisco sour.:p

And another fan report. Stayed last week - exactly the same treatment as above, including upgrade to suite. Loved the cocktails by the pool.
Have stayed at many properties in Europe, and this one by far beats them all. If all hotels treated plats/concierge guests like this, there would be no need for lounges.
Highly recommended.

This is my favourite in hotel in BKK, and I have been staying here since around 2000. I have strayed, and stayed at almost every 5* hotel in the city, but always come back to the SGS. This hotel is 100/100 in my book. BKK has a stack of hotels that might be 95/100, but everything just falls that little bit short of the majestic SGS. A very big ^^^

will add my .02 about the hotel, it's terrific as a plat. had the same experience as kyushuman (okay, without the issue of the letter ;)) and am very much looking forward to returning to the grande sukhumvit at the end of our six week thailand/laos jaunt. that breakfast is terrific, as was everything else about our stay. ^ upgrade, staff, laundry, etc. just marvelous. LOVE being a plat. ^

You'll have BarSu to yourself if you go there during Happy Hour. I still go there anyway. All the bartenders and manager greet me by name and always ask how my wife is doing if she's not traveling with me. Living Room and Sala are also just fine.
Last week was my 30th stay. Was not upgraded to a suite (paid 4300 baht/night using SPG50). Was escorted to my room by the Director of Rooms. I didn't mind not having a suite as I was solo this trip. Was given instead a 55 minute massage in the Grande Spa.
Going back next week for another 2 nights. Can't wait!

Do you recommend this hotel or the Westin Grand Sukhumvit?
I got a SPG Credit Card and have enough points for one night (using cash and points). I do not have Gold, etc (If anyone has any suggestions on how to get upgraded within the next 3 months, I would really appreciate it).
What does the butler service include? I noticed that when I clicked this:
View Standard Amenities for All Room Classes
https://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/rooms/amenities.html?propertyID=357
This states that ALL rooms include butler service, is that true?
I will be there on my honeymoon and appreciate any input you can provide.
PS - We are only here for one night in June, then we are transferring over to the Hilton as part of our tour package. But I do want this to be a very memorable experience.
Thank you!!!

I liked the Plaza Athenee better!
Upgrade to the club floor for 1500 points/night.
Much more "mellow" location, across from US ambassadors house, yet 1 block from Sky Train. Unlike Sheraton GS, no hookers in the pool area.
Office building with supermarket next door.
Club floor upgrade gives a fantastic breakfast, free cocktails and afternoon tea.
SGS has many plusses, but for a honeymoon stay, I think the Plaza Athenee is much more elegant and low key, with less people.
Of course, this is my opinion.

You may want to consider Lebua at State Tower!!!
I ONLY stay at SPG properties, but went to the 64th floor at Lebua last month for cocktails at their outdoor (yes, 64th floor) bar and restaurant.
I met someone staying there (on the 53rd floor) who said he paid $135 (with breakfast) for an incredible room/suite. He said it was HUGE and sounded like a great honeymoon location. I think there was a sunken tub....
I would check their rates as your time approaches and e-mail them for a deal. They are close to the river. We took a tuk-tuk from the Royal Orchid Sheraton there, but it is also within walking distance.
As much as I like the SPG Bangkok hotels, I would consider this for a 1 or 2 night stay.

There is a Taxi Service sign (Yellow sign) as you exit the baggage area and with 1200bht you could have a Van, if you have lots of luggage or 4-500 bht taxi. Please make sure they take toll roads all the way b/c traffic jam is horrendous. We were in BKK a couple of weeks ago.

It did not offend me and I know what you mean about Pattaya but that is just not what you normally see around the pool area at the SGS. I am quite sure they dont have any rules about a guy taking his "girlfriend" to the pool with him but the SGS is not the normal scene for those type of tourist. Most of the time it is easy to tell but dont assume every westerner with a Thai lady is one of those situations, saying that as a westerner married to a Thai. :)

I wouldn't call the lounge private. Private, IMO, is when they escort you directly to your room and check you in there. This I've had done for me mainly at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai.

We had private in room check in at the SGS but that may have been due to using a hotel car from BKK rather than being SPG Platinum.

i am consistently offered private check in at the sgs which i generally decline as it takes longer. on a side note, i agree with the comments about the restaurant and bar on the 64th/65th floor of the lebua hotel. if you enjoy places like that you should try the long table bar and restaurant around the corner from the sgs. it is on i believe the 25th floor but has an outdoor area that is quite nice and includes an outdoor pool around the bar area. very nice and only a short walk from the hotel. it is owned by the bed supper club people.

Room & Suite Upgrades*
Use as few as 1,000 StarpointsŪ for a room upgrade at any participating Starwood hotel or resort. Arrange for an upgrade within five days of arrival to a Specialty, Specialty Select Room, or Suite on reservations booked at RACK, COR, SET, or BAR. You may upgrade from any category of room with a Free Night Award or a paid reservation. *

This has now become my preferred hotel in BKK after our first visit. We arrived on mothers day so treated Mrsdrron to a limo transfer.Started the check in process in car.As we turned into Sukhumvit the driver called the hotel.waiting for us were 2 porters and an asst.Manager who escorted us to our upgrade-a grande deluxe suite.Checkin formalities completed in room as the Asst manager called the butler to bring us some tea, unpack and take 6 items for complementary laundering. Also as part of our benefits-free in room internet, free drinks in any of the 3 bars 6pm-8pm,free breakfast in the restaurant-this was an absolutely fabulous buffet with touches such as peeling your mango as you wanted it.
On top of all this there was 30% of food in their restaurants. Both nights we were here we went to Basil their thai restaurant-absolutely fantastic. The soft shell crab was the best we had ever had so we had 3 serves the second night.Duck with Tamarind sauce was excellent.First night 3 appetisers,2 mains-B1500.On the second night the staff remembered us by name.7 appetisers-B1200.
Mrsdrron christened our suite the Overture suite-room 1812.It was a combination of a deluxe and grande deluxe rooms so 2 full bathrooms-

Hi,
I have two 3 night stays in and out of Bangkok in August while on business in SEA. I really liked my last stay at SGS. Best rate I find at *wood and other websites is third night free (although not at lowest rate - so three nights is 12000 bt++). As this is still above my per diem, I'm wondering if a direct contact with someone at the hotel would produce a lower rate - given their low occupancy and my total need of six nights - or are the website rates the bottom line.
If so, does anyone have a name of a contact at the SGS that might help?
Is it your experience that waiting a bit longer will produce a lower rate?
Or do I bite the bullet and pay the difference out of pocket?
Thanks!

Any recommendations on which service to use? Or does SGS provide transfers?

I would think it is one room at each property. If it was me, I would count on one room getting plat benefits and use points to upgrade the other room to exec or in this case the grande deluxe level.

PLT members may book as many rooms as they want/need ;) However the PLT benefits only apply to one room however YMMV.
In my last visit at the SGS I had reserved three rooms under my name. 48 hours prior to arrival all three standard rooms were upg to 1 x Grand Deluxe Suite & 2 x Grand Deluxe Room - of course I was literally jumping for joys because us six guys on vacation were going to go raid BarSu at 'happy hour' :D But at check-in, this was quickly altered and my room remained the Suite but the other 2 got reverted back to the original booking :(

Actually two stays recently as I was in and out of BKK on business.
Thanks to board members for advice on booking my recent trip at the SGS- it was outstanding. Service! Service! Service! And not just efficient, but friendly. Best front desk anywhere! Every employee I encountered in a total of six nights from room attendant to GM to pool/spa/gym went out of their way to be friendly and engaging.
I had stayed here before, but also at the Westin Grande and JW Marriott- in the future there is no discussion. Easy Skytrain. And absolutely no problem with very early checkin (after nearly 18 hours in the air!) And I think FT board members will appreciate the fact that when I inquired about late check out as I had an evening flight home, it was absolutely no problem. In fact the desk suggested I was planning to head to the airport too early - why not stay a bit longer! How often do you hear that!
