Good question, but not really specific to United so I will move this to the Australia (New Zealand & South Pacific) Forum so the members there can answer your question.

The approach and take off depend on prevailing winds. I usually take a seat on the right side, since most of my flights have arrived off shore and circled around right to an approach from the south. But since it depends on the winds that day, it is a pure crapshoot.

Welcome to Flyer Talk MontereyJoe :)

Very early in the morning landings at SYD are usually from the south due to noise management. It normally switches to land from the north a little later. How good is your crystal ball as to whether United will be on time or late?

The best views of the city, harbour bridge and opera house are when land from the north, on the left hand side of the a/c.

This is the view (http://realtravel.com/lp-486030-217002-sydney_at_last_photos)we got a couple of years ago after flying down from a diversion in Brisbane (fog in Sydney). Very memorable, but it was already about 1 p.m. so we were very late. BTW, it was out of the right-hand side of the aircraft.
