Hey all. My fiancee and I are taking off for Asia and I wanted to just ask people for their experiences and any advice. We want to stay in Japan for at least a month and are considering renting an apartment, anyone done this? We then want to head over to Thailand for 2-3 weeks. Is the only option to fly?? I know Japan is expensive but we are good budgeters, my big concern is how to cheaply go from Japan to Thailand (under $200).
So my big questions are bout flights. Not knowing where we're going exactly, do we take one-way flights? So far I'm thinking, a round trip to Japan, stay for about a month then a round trip to Thailand and return home from Japan.
Help!?

There are guest houses in Japan that i believe you can rent out by month. Just do a search on google.
There is absolutely no way you can get from Japan to Thailand for $200! Japan is an island so obviously you would have to fly. (there are boats to china where then you can catch multiple trains to thailand..won't save you much money) A flight on the cheap side(deals) would cost somewhere between 3-400. Average around 4-500 US.
Your idea for the flight is good! Another way is on some fares you might be able to book a stopover in Japan and then to Thailand all on one ticket. Also to consider check out the all asia air pass on Cathay Pacific. (http://www.cathayusa.com/offers/aapinsider/home.asp)

The only way to do that route at a remotely sensible price is to book a ticket on a Japanese carrier from the US to Thailand and do a stopover in Japan. But if you're worried about $200, a month in Japan is going to annihilate your finances, especially given the current state of the yen...
