I haven't stayed at any property for longer than I should and now am approaching the 1-yr since my last stay (or last account activity).
How can I get some points so I don't loose my accumulated points?

Simple book an eligible stay at a SPG participating property and enjoy yourself. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

Get a Starwood Amex card, which is something you would probably want in any event, even if you weren't looking to make sure your account didn't expire. 10,000 points for the first spend, with first year free. If you already have the card, just use it and it resets the clock.

The Westin in Wheeling (?) has some worthy food, too.
Another option is to use the airmilesmart.com shopping portal to earn 500 starpoints.

Technically-speaking, no. This is a bonus transaction, not a stay transaction. But, YMMV.

So, does this apply to the AMEX bonus points too?

The SPG AMEX CC bonus points transaction for first time purchases is not counted as an activity. But YMMV.

Actually I was asking about the regular monthly spend on the SPG Amex card. It is not a "stay transaction" so does it keep an account active or not?

It does according to the Terms and Conditions of Membership in SPG:
3.2. You will be considered an "Active Member" so long as (a) your Membership has not been cancelled (by you or us), and (b) you have had an Eligible Stay at a Participating Property within the previous 12 months, or (c) you have earned Starpoints by using a Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card during the previous 12 months. Starpoints resulting from transfers or earnings from Program affiliates do not count toward active status. Owners are not subject to the Eligible Stay requirement and will continue to be considered an Active Member as long as they own their Vacation Ownership interest and maintain their Starwood Vacation Ownership account in good standing.
Thanks for clarifying your question, though.

Although presumably Amex transfers (from Membership Rewards) would not satisfy the requirement.
That said, I wonder how good SPG has gotten with actually closing dormant accounts? I seem to recall one thread where a FTer drained alll but a single SPG point from their account and waited a long, long time for it to ever get closed. I seem to recall several bets and missed deadlines about when it would actually happen. :)
Edited to say -- it was sosafan beginning with post #49 in this thread:

As of August, 2006 (more than 3 years from date of last stay) he still had his 1 Starpoint.

But if you have a "first time purchase" then the purchase itself would qualify as an "activity".

You are absolutely correct but since the initial question is about "bonus", I have to answer directly..

Take out your significant other and book a hotel room or something. Do something fun and you'll keep your points, don't spend too much time trying to figure out how to game the system, live a little.
