Starwood Preferred Guest - How to get miles to a Airline partner?

I was told to simply show my Airline membership card upon check-in to receive miles to my Airline partner. I have yet to receive miles dating back since Oct/Nov of 2008.

Do I contact the Airline or SPG for the missing miles?

Are these partner miles different from the Starpoints? Basically, do I get the miles & Starpoints -or- pick betweent the miles or Starpoints?

I know on Delta, I get 500 Skymiles everytime I rent from Dollar rent a car, so this has to be the same concept.

One has a choice of earning SPG points or of using a direct deposit feature to earn airline miles. I'm not aware of a mechanism that allows one to earn both with Starwood.

The FF web site of the relevant airline will have instructions and contact details. For the FF plans I have used, that has invloved sending a note and hotel receipt to the hotel chain.
