I'm almost positive that I was on the Choice Privileges website a couple of weeks ago looking to make reservations. I noticed that each hotel had the work "reviews" next to it and you could click on it to see reviews. Now I don't see it anymore. Am I mistaken?

I can just imagine that if Choice did put up reviews, then looked at the first reviews in for the typical EconoLodge, they would have quickly decided to yank the reviews. :)

Given that Choice hotels are so inconsistent in quality, I don't see why they would want to have reviews, unless it was only available for those specific hotels which were Gold Award Winners (that's how some hotels are listed in the printed catalog). But there are so few of those, a random search would hardly ever show them...

I can't thnk of any other hotel-chain-operated website that has reviews of their own hotels. Reviews are something I tend to associate only with third-party booking sites (since they have no preference for one brand than another, and thus don't mind having some particular brand's hotels get more negative reviews than others).

The best reviews, though, are at sites that don't even do booking, like TripAdvisor.

I know I was using the "along a route" option and the map probably had 30 hotels. There were * ratings and some places had 80-90 reviews. I thought that seemed like an impossible amount.

Ah, well, "along a route" is most likely outsourced to someone who provides that (as opposed to having been developed in-house) and customizes it for what information is filtered (it seems very simlar to stuff I've seen on other sites, not always for hotels), and presumably the third party also does stuff for some non-chain-specific travel site (Travelocity, Expedia, Hotels.com, whoever) that does have reviews, and maybe they neglected to "filter" correctly at first.

Wow, I saw this yesterday (using Firefox at work), but don't see it again this morning (using SeaMonkey -- a Mozilla-based "suite" -- on my own computer this morning). It was a column between the hotel name and the distance. If you "hovered" on it, a "balloon" popped up explaining that it was based on responses to emailed surveys completed in the last 12 months. (I rarely get surveys for hotels I stay at recurrently, so this is probably about one vote per guest, whether they only stay once or have a lot of experience at the property.)

So my guess above was incorrect. It is actually done by Choice themselves from their own emailed surveys.

Btw, I noticed that few hotels showed more than 4.5 stars, and few hotels showed less than 2.5 or 3 stars, even the ones that most people reading TripAdvisor would shun. And there's no way to get any details. So IMHO it's of rather limited use.

I agree it doesn't seem to be of much use seeing there aren't any comments you can see, plus you only occasionally see the ratings themselves. I wonder what triggers it to display? I use Firefox also as my browser but don't always see it.
