So, who needs this? I mean, why don't they just call the carrier and have the phone unlocked? Are the rules different for unlocking in lets say, Canada?

From my experiences in the US it takes at least a day or a couple of days to have it happen ... and you're at the whim of the CSR to make it happen.

Doing this isn't something a carrier is obligated to do, so its one of those grey things...

Could be. I know with Verizon, you have to be a good customer and current on ur acct. I think they even said never late on a payment for a specific period of time? Oh, also new customers dont get unlocked right away, at least what I was told when I unlocked my Storm. I know VZW isnt one of the carriers they are unlocking, but some that dont qualify may be able to do so with this offer??

does the storm work with a GSM card? I thought the only verizon phone that would work with other sims was the blackberry curve world phone.. and even then, when its unlocked.. would only work with sims outside of the us (by using its gps)

crackberry is the best blackberry site by far.. i spent a good half hour looking for firmware updates on the bb website (both us and eu).. went to crackberry and found the procedure and file within a minute.

new upgraded software for the curve was so much better than the one i had previously.

Yes, the Storm works on GSM networks and therefore accepts a SIM. It's a CDMA and Quad-band GSM device, capable of working on both domestic and foreign GSM networks when unlocked and using an appropriate SIM.

Once it's unlocked, it will work with any provider's SIM; GPS has nothing to do with it. The only reason the Storm doesn't roam on GSM networks in the US as delivered is because the SIM provided by Verizon (and to which the phone is locked) doesn't allow it.

AT&T an tmobile will unlock your phone after 90 days of service in good standing. Depending on how old the phone is, AT&T will have the unlock code in their system and give it to you right away. If not, they will give it to you within 24 - 48 hrs. With AT&T you can unlock as many phones as you want within any time period. But, I believe tmobile will only unlock one phone \every 90 days or so.

Bought a BB curve 2 weeks ago, got the unlock code a couple of days after receiving it.

Not everyone is eligible for free operator unlocking.

once unlocked, if you swap sim cards and use different providers, what settings (wap, etc.) do you have to change for it to work completely?

Are those settings for different providers around the world readily available (i.e. posted on crackberry) or do you have to dig for them?

If you're referring to the Storm, there are specific instructions for AT&T and T-Mobile at Crackberry; the forum is here (http://forums.crackberry.com/f135/). Sorry, but I don't have a source for instructions for overseas providers.

You can unlock your phone (AT&T for me) and still use it just fine right? Unlocking doesn't take away your service?

And even these things are not fixed, underscoring the "get the CSR to do it" comment above. I got my AT&T RAZR unlocked within a week, because I called and said I wanted it. They did it.

I got my AT&T broabband dongle unlocked after two weeks for the same reason- I said I wanted it.

Now, since I have autopay, I'm always current, so that might help. But exceptions are certainly possible, at least with AT&T.

Cheers.

No it doesn't take away your service. Your original SIM will work in the phone, as will the SIMs of other providers.

It has no effect on your current service. It just means you can also use it with other services.

I always make sure my phones are unlocked, so I can switch sim cards (and telephony providers) as I switch countries.

That said, one ATT rep said he is of the opinion that unlocking leads to more software glitches in smart phones. Not sure if that is based on what he's seen of customer feedback issues, or if it was b.s.?

Well, from the fact that they are offering the service I assumed that but that is why I ask the question. Who needs this? As in, who is not eligible. I though the in the US the carrier was somewhat obligated to unlock the phone. I have never had a problem unlocking a phone even one that I have had for a week or so but it may just be that I have been with the same company so long.

Each carrier has specific rules as to when and if they will unlock.

One of which is your account has to be current. If you were cut off because you were not current, you would need to find a different way to unlock it so you could use the phone with some other sim

You can also buy locked phones and blackberries on places like ebay, at tag sales, etc. In those cases, you could not just call AT&T or Tmobile to get them unlocked. If you are really lucky, you can find them on trains.

While it is possible to get a phone unlocked if you meet all the carrier's conditions, they will not unlock one if you don't.

T-Mobile sends customers an unlock code upon request, if you have been a customer for more than 3 months. Just had it done for my new triband phone so it works in Europe with prepaid cards, did it with my Treo three years ago too.

I still haven't gotten either of the two codes I requested. :(

So I just called up AT&T and they gave me the code. :p

The link in the first post has pages and pages of people posting they are waiting or their codes.

They posted this on Friday

Hi
For all of you who have not received their code yet, you can post your order in the thread we monitor and we will pull your order out and process it faster. The link to the thread is here http://forums.crackberry.com/f2/cellunlock-net-unlock-code-giveaway-1804...

We thank you for your patience and we are doing our best to get all orders out as soon as possible.

But as many of the posters have mentioned, that link doesn't go to where it should.

I wouldn't hold my breath on this one.

This is a tad off topic, but related. Does anyone know a good roaming SIM which is Blackberry data compatible to use as a backup (e.g. more by the kilobyte than a monthly fee). My wife has a global blackberry plan with TMobile but has had a few problems lately with Blackberry roaming when regular roaming seems fine. A backup SIM which could tap into BB might be helpful here. Call in Europe has this feature, but they want 72 hours to turn it on or off:

http://www.callineurope.com/cgi-bin/cie.cgi?p=blackberry.html

I'm looking for something instant. It took Tmobile close to five days to sort out the problem with the UAE and she was without BB service except on wifi in the hotel room.
