I have a verizon wireless usb modem, but I use 3 or four different laptops so I would like to hook the modem up to a router so I can wirelessly connect each of my laptops as I move and not have to unplug the modem each time.

At the verizon store the sales person said there was some kind of router that allowed this that cost $300 and sold at Best Buy - but didn't know brand - so does such a thing exist (and preferably not so expensive) or could I possible use an apple airport?

Look at Cradlepoint's routers.

For a discussion of many of the products out there, look at:

You can't use an Airport directly with a USB modem, you'd need some intermediary device. Linksys makes a USB modem router, but I like Cradlepoint far better. They have several devices that travel well (e.g. are small and multifaceted). I travel with the PHS-300.

Don't get the bestbuy one - that is a bit of overkill for what it does. Like the previous poster said, get the Cradlepoint PHS-300. It comes with a free car charger and case at the moment if you purchase it directly from Cradlepoint.

thanks... I wasn't planning on getting whatever the bestbuy one was -since I don't even know what it was and way too expensive...

can someone explain how this works - now I plug the modem in and use software each time to connect to the verizon network. If I attach the modem to a router how do I connect to the wireless network from router (eg how do I cause the modem to dial/connect when it isn't attached to the computer)?

Sorry if this is too elementary but before I shell out $100 or so I'd like to know I can use it. Thanks

Just got the cradlepoint 350 and it's like magic - somehow it automatically dials (which I used to have to prompt).
Setup was easy - plug it in and figure out what the password is (actually had to read the directions;))

3 things

1) luckily I have an unimited plan but I guess if I had a limited plan no one else could use my connection if they didn't have the password (is that right?) and I don't use data when connected but not transmitting (I assume it is connected somehow all the time even though when I use the usb directly in the computer it disconnects after some period of lack of use)

2) I have to change wifi networks when I want to print as I am using an airport to print wirelessly

3) I have to find a wifi usb or pcmcia card for my oldest (but still working) laptop

Thanks so much for the help!
