I have a valid passport but it is expiring on April the 5th... and I was thinking about going to mexico next week for a quick trip of about a week...
Does Mexico have time that is needed for passport validity or will in not be a problem....

I've read conflicting information...

Anyone with the correct answer would be much appreciated...

thanks
Bruce

According to the embassy:

Visas for foreigners (INM)

In accordance with dispositions by the National Immigration Institute, in order to enter Mexico US citizens should show any US official ID. Passports are not required.

Nonetheless, US citizens must bear in mind the requirements set by the US government for re-entry.

IIRC, the passport problem is mainly going to the US, here in MEX we love your dollars :)

A lot depends on how you are going.... if you are flying it's the airlines that may not let you board if they have some "thoughts" on passport expiration dates.

The airlines will check IATA's Timatic database to determine what documents are needed. Here's what Timatic says for National: USA / Destination: Mexico:

National U.S.A. (US) /Destination Mexico (MX)
Mexico (MX)
Passport required.
- Passport and/or passport replacing documents must be valid
on arrival.
- Warning: if departing from the U.S.A.(regardless of any destination passport exemptions), a valid passport and/or accepted departure document (TIRULES/R9) is required by the U.S. immigration authorities.

So it looks like you're OK as long as your passport is valid when you arrive in Mexico.

BTW, Timatic data can be looked up on DL's website here (http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/plan_flight/international_travel_information/visa_passport_information/).

This won't be useful for the OP, but for anyone wanting to travel to Mexico with a minor, be sure you have a notarized statement covering all accompanying minors: from absent parent(s) giving permission (and I also recommend a letter granting permission to secure health care for the minors), or proof you are the sole custodian(s) in cases of parental absence, foster care, etc.

If you do not provide this document, you may well be turned around at the airport and denied flying to Mexico - if the airline ignores this rule, they could be liable 1) for muchos pesos infraction, and 2) to fly you all back on the next flight. In Mexico, the lack of such a document can also be a serious problem if you come to the attention of the authorities for any reason.

As to a passport, many countries have a rule that state your passport must have at least six months remaining validity beyond your last possible departure date, iirc - be sure you get your passport renewed in time to allow spontaneous travel and avoid the heavy demand late Spring / Summer passport season. (Though an expired passport is reasonable identification in some instances, you may find not everyone will act in concert with that belief. ;))
