Hi
Considering using EVA Feb 2010 LHR-BKK and back, but need some answers before commiting to them over other operators, so thanks in advance. We intend to be traveling PL.

Which lounges do they use at each end and how good are they, food, wine, beer etc...
At the time of year we are going (feb 2010) it would seem that it would be a 747 not 777 so, is the PL product, (lie flat etc) on the 747 that is used on this route or is there a chance of geting a combo with the older bus product.
Any other comments regarding this route or product is also very welcome.

Recently, 747-400 COMBI has never been used on this route. It has always been a 747-400 or a 777-300ER.

Premium Laurel or Economy upstairs on the 747-400 would be your choice.

At LHR you get the SAS London Lounge. Not sure if you are familiar with it, but it's on two levels and is pretty reasonable. Better than the Maple Leaf Lounge they used to use, better than Servisair, on a par but less than cosy than SQs. Usual booze, snacks, magazines etc. All cold food as far as I remember. Couldn't get wireless internet when I tried, but apparently you can plug yourself in. Not an issue for me. Sometimes a little busy. It is JUST possible that by the time you fly they will use a different one, so no guarantees. (They've been in the SAS one for a few years now, but they have changed in the past.) Can't get away from the fact it's miserable 'ole LHR. Don't arrive at the gate to early. They always seem to announce "boarding" when it's nowhere near "boarding".

At BKK, you get EVA's own lounge. Pretty reasonable. I rather like the hot Thai snacks - pad thai, chicken green curry etc. But then I'm going onto/coming from Taipei. Choice of beers, wine, juices, coffee etc. My only complaint is the temp is a little warm. Wireless internet and a nice view out of the window.

PL is pretty much the same on the 747 and 777. I suppose the 747 is slightly nicer, especially if you get the front cabin. Agree with the expert coolfish1103 in these matters - can't see you getting the old Super Business product.

Remember to book your PL meal online in advance for a wider choice.

Separate check-in and priority boarding at both ends, of course. Slightly better organised boarding at BKK. On arrival at LHR, should you not be an EU national you can get a card off EVA for fast track immigration. Priority luggage handling works BKK-LHR. Not sure the other way - should be OK.

Evening departure LHR T3 (usually around 9.30pm) for afternoon arrival the next day in BKK. Lunchtime departure BKK for evening arrival LHR (usually around 7.30pm). Fly every day except Mondays. I suppose they might add Mondays. A number of Taiwanese going to the UK now - from this month they get visa free access to the UK - unlike almost everywhere else.

Should you not wish to stump up for PL, consider Elite (the premium economy product) if you can get a reasonable price. No lounge for Elite. I'm afraid Economy can be a bit of a boozy "sex tourist" express. But if you do end up in Economy, try desperately to get upstairs on the 747 (an amazing 36" pitch!) where it's quieter or whether up or down, an exit. Strangely exits often seem available - presumably because people book non-exits online and don't bother to ask to change at check-in.

If you think you're going to make the trip in PL more than a couple of times, then consider joining Evergreen Club.

I've never flown BKK-LHR but have been on TPE-BKK segment of BR67/68 plenty of times. It has long struck me that the mob headed on to LHR sure look allot rowdier on average than the either the LAX or TPE crowds whom are generally quite well behaved even in long haul Y. :D

Actually, AFAIK the London Lounge is not an SAS lounge but a joint venture between AC and SAS. Since it opened there has not been a separate Maple Leaf lounge.

If you pay attention, the front desk is usually staffed by two lounge matrons: an SAS one on the left, and an AC one on the right.

As to wireless internet, it works fine. You need to get the SSID and password, but they are pretty obvious and lately, written on pieces of paper laying around in the computer area. Otherwise the matrons will tell you.

A couple of questions, actually about YVR-TPE. Seems they use the 747-400. We booked on the AC codeshare, and AC seems to only have access to the back portion of the PL cabin. Is it conceivable that calling EVA, they might move up to the front?

Also, what's this about ordering meals in advance, would it be possible to do that if booked on the AC flight No.? I was unable to extract what the EVA locator is from the AC people.

Call EVA. They should be able to look up the EVA reference number and assign seats. The online meal order says it does not work for code shares though but I would still give it a try if you can get the EVA reference number.

Good... glad to hear that. I remember I did ask a member of staff and was directed to the PCs and told no wireless. But that was a while back. I had never noticed it was jointly run by Air Canada, but had noticed other star alliance carriers use it - well, Thai ...

Sorry can't help with the meal booking - but I wonder if phoning an EVA office could sort it out? I'm told it does save them money, because for pax that don't order in advance they generally have to load more alternatives.

As for the seats... EVA do block at least the front row for EVA Diamonds. I can imagine they might block the rest of the cabin for EVA ticketed pax. I suppose it also depends on the kind of codeshare - I know with some codeshares certain seats are allocated to the other airline and its fixed. In this case, EVA wouldn't even know how many of those seats are actually taken until just before take-off. Probably still worth a try calling them.

OP mentioned lie flat - sorry to say it is far from lie flat, more like ski slope flat. BKK lounge is mediocre to say the least, no toilet or showers though as I recall. It is also something of a hike from the gate.

Unfortunately, it's a no to both of your questions. On EVA's reservation system, your fight shows up as ACxxxx. And as such, they can't do anything other than referring you back to AC.

Not all BR's codeshare behaves like this though. Other codeshares (i.e. LAX-TPE on COxxxx) show up as BR flight number on EVA's system. So one can still have full services offered on BR's website.

The Eva air lounge at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi is now fine with toilets and a shower.
It was the old airport at Don Mueang where the lounge was pretty shoddy, no toilet or shower.
Interestingly enough you could pay to use a shower at the Salon at the old airport, I used that facility once and was propostioned for a special massage:D

As usual Jimbo has given a very comprehensive coverage of BR067 and 068.

If travelling in February next year, please be aware that Chinese New Year is in the middle of the month, this affects availability/discounts etc.

As for the clientele in economy with Eva on the LHR-BKK leg, expect similar with Thai.:D

Only one EVA lounge at Suvarnabhumi. The old EVA lounge at Don Maung had no restroom or shower. At Suvarnabhumi the restrooms are to the right as you are walking away from reception. Possible the doors are easily mistaken for closets since the signs are some kind of stylized picture of a man or a woman. No text.
