How much luck do others have in getting those?
For me it seems to be hit or miss. I sometimes wonder if there is a magic codeword that I only manage to say about 50% of the time.

What is a Platinum upgrade? I have never gotten one of those with my status. Are you staying at properties in the US or abroad?

This page talks about it: https://goldcrownclub.bestwestern.com/members/levels.asp. I usually print it out and bring it with me and ask if they have any complimentary upgrades available.
Complimentary room upgrades, early check-in and late check-out privileges, upon availability
I mostly stay at US places. I asked in Australia and the desk clerk said we already had one of the best rooms, so to upgrade us, they would have to move us out of the hotel. I assumed this meant he was aware of the program. I intend to try in Italy and Germany in August this year, but I'm doubtful since a lot of places we reserved didn't seem to have many choices in rooms.
Sometimes we've gotten upgraded to a suite, other times we've gotten a room with a jacuzzi tub. Other times we've gotten nothing even when the hotel is darn near empty and I know there are better rooms than the one I reserved... I sometimes wonder if it depends on the mood of the desk clerk.

I'm guessing I'm not going to have much better luck in italy later this year. :(

I probably should have thrown a  in my query to exemplify my sarcasm. Even when I was doing my run for Lifetime Diamond, I never experienced any special service and still have not at a US property. In France, I once received a 1-category upgrade, but that is all they have even done for me. I view BW status as an incidental status until their elite program develops into something more viable and uniform. Choice has been successfully rolling out a basic elite status in their program - perhaps BW could follow their lead?

Ha, yeah that might have helped. Long after I posted the reply I noticed your BW status.... hahahaha ooops.

Maybe this will improve in the new program?

How easily they fool you! What new program? It's just a new name for the same old program! :)

I got a fancy new Diamond card in the mail either way. It looks quite fashionable compared with the old card. I do miss the cheesey luggage tags.

In over 100 stay over the last few years, I've been upgraded once, in Belgium. European properties seem to be the only ones with upgrade options. Very few options stateside for that.

A nearly non existant benefit. I have been Plat for 2 years and now Diamond for the last 3. I recieved 1 upgrade from a standard room to a full suite for a 3 day stay 2 years ago. I do notice a notation on most of my res at the front desk about the upgrade. But, in practice they never upgrade you.If asked they will usually plead ignorance about the whole benefit. I called corp once on this. They told me since most BW are privately owned there is nothing they can do about the lack of upgrades.
Mildly annoying benefit, essentially useless, just hot air pr IMHO.

Completely agree. So far, not a single upgrade. When I asked about this at one hotel recently, they told me that I was already in a "very nice room".

In five years I got only one upgrade. It was the Best Western Macrander in Dresden Germany (from a Standard Room to an Comfort Room).

I earned Diamond a few years back staying in the neighborhood of 40 nights at a particular US property. Never had an automatic upgrade but was always accommodated when I asked. It helped that I researched what I wanted on the reservation site in advance. And also that I was staying there almost every week for a while.
This property had specialty rooms on the top two floors that were roughly 50% bigger than the standard rooms. Unfortunately, the bathrooms were really poorly designed. (No shelves in the shower? Huh?) So typically I preferred the standard rooms anyway.

I noticed most of the US Best Western properties have only ONE class of rooms, hence I never gotten any upgrades at any of the properties. However, in Asia, the Platinum status is really recognised. You will get the free upgrades to suites etc.
So you guys may want to consider using your Platinum status out here in Asia.

Do you have any particular recommendations for NRT that recognize status? Is the recognition there on award stays or just paid stays?

I personally haven't stayed in a Best Western in Japan, so can't really provide any recommendations for you. Besides, the only BW nearest to Narita is in Tokyo itself.
In Thailand and China, the recognition is for both award and paid stays.
