Diners Club Club Rewards - account compromised but won't tell how

I received a new DC card in the mail along with a note stating that my account had been compromised with information taken from a merchant.

It's a pain in the neck changing a whole bunch of sites for my new credit card info (especially car rentals.)

I called to find out which merchant and DC wouldn't tell me. Any idea why? Any recourse?

That is normal practice.

They called me yesterday and said the same thing.

I went through this with Citi about 8 months ago and had the same experience. They won't tell you which merchant (after all, the merchants are their clients and each is probably worth more to the credit card company than any individual).

I had several conversations with account security staff in the month or so after the compromise occurred and I just kept leading questions (e.g. "I heard they were having problems with x".) Finally, someone told me that the particular problem with my account took place at a bricks and mortar store, not an internet retailer, and that my card had been swiped and copied. The bricks and mortar point narrowed down the number of merchants considerably for me - I hardly ever used the card in real stores.

Just got the same notice. Minor hassle. Not too worried about it.

I got 1 of these last summer from DC & from B of A on my USAir Visa this January.
It was a PITA because I had memorized my DC # & because I forgot to update it on my cable TV auto-pay. My cable co. actually charged me a $29 fee as if I had written them a bouncy check :td: , so I called them with the new DC# & successfully asked them to remove the fee ^ !

I got the same letter in the mail with no explanation after calling to request one (my first time this happens). The worst part about it was the customer service rep had serious attitude. I asked her if my credit could have been compromised and she told me to go check my credit report... literally. Are these guys serious? Citibank is really pushing the envelope with their CS it seems.

My wife got one for the same reason but I didn't. We are both on the same account. When I called and asked, they said a specific merchant where the card had been used had been hacked. It's strange, since the new card came in the mail with no advance notice of a phone call and the old one was still good until we validated the new one.

I had several unauthorized charges to local merchants in Las Cruces, NM... I live in Florida.

Diners said it appeared the user had my card, but it was in my possession the whole time.. I was nowhere near NM.

They closed the account and overnighted a new card... was handled well.

I also got the new card in the mail. I am convinced they want to annoy us all until we close our accounts. But why don't they just kill off DC and send us all a notice saying they are terminating and transfer us to one of their other crappy cards?

No doubt doing that would violate the contract terms that Diner's has with their redemption partners - the hotels and airlines. They view your accumulated Club Reward points as pending income for their loyalty programs when Diner's has to transfer (buy) points. Follow the money and you will find the truth.
