A free upgrade to F class if you book in J or C. But what a rubbish offer. It's subject to availability on check in.

There are only 9 seats on each flight to London, and 49 J class seats or so. So are they really only selling 9 J/C seats on each flight now? Or are lots of people going to get disappointed?

And does that mean, goodbye to mileage upgrades from J to F?

Really another promotion that has very little value...basically they are saying, buy a J class seat, and you will be entered into a raffle to get a F class seat on one sector only!

Glad I'm flying after 31 March, and the other way. Presumably this means that the F cabin is going to be full on every flight, as long as there are at least 9 J pax? No thanks.

u have to be booked on J/C class and not D or I fares which most travellors would book on. Don't think everybody will book J/C class to London where I class fares exist

Many business travellers book on J/C or at least they used to. This promotion is to try sway these travellers away from BA, but will leave those trying CX whose primary motivation was this offer, with a bad taste in their mouth.

ex-JPN first class upgrade promotion to DXB/BAH/JNB

Interesting that they include JNB on this list. HKG-JNB only has one flight per week with F service, Tuesdays out and Wednesdays back, and it's on 343s, so no new suites.

There goes any incentive to book F tix HKG-LHR...not only could you possibly get an upgrade J-F for free, but F class is guaranteed to be full. Nice way to dilute the product

Yes, the F cabin is guaranteed to be full. For those who really wanted to fly F, they will still pay for it. In addition, mileage upgrades must be ahead of these upgrades.

This is just a scheme to try to find more high-revenue passengers. The chance of them getting op-upped to F is still small.

And p.ss them off in the process when they realise they don't get their free upgrade.

Haha yea exactly, it's the ultimate short-term strategy. Basically an attempt to trick customers into buying J (or just CX) tix thinking they'll get an F upgrade. Maybe they're hoping people will switch from BA or something and then fall in love with all the 22 year-old FAs and microwave food that are staples in J?

By the way, speaking of misleading (as someone else alluded to) have you checked out all the pictures and the way they market the ex-Japan F-upgrade promotion? First there's the Skytraxx award mention - which I'm pretty sure was for the new F class (at least, that's what the CX COO admits in one of his quotes in the press release CX links to). Then there's the nice collection of pictures...the closet in new F, someone completely stretched out on that big bed sleeping from above, the TV...yes, I already know there is the disclaimer that you may not get the new F (or even F at all! What a promotion!) but if I'm not mistaken many of the DXB planes do not have new F (or even F at all), and JNB F service is pretty slim. Pretty funny if you ask me.

Are you sure about this? I am flying JNB-HKG on March 17 and it shows as a 747-400.

Unfortunately, yes. Last 744 appears to be 29 March.

Another rubbish promo. Worser upgrade scheme than the 7-day window SSWU certificate I get as a Super Elite with Aeroplan on a low coach bracket fare.

But LHR is the ONLY European destination where A class is sold ex-HKG online.

dont be too harsh on cx ... i recall BA had the same sort of deal four or five years ago for this route.

actually BA is doing the same thing (http://www.britishairways.com/travel/lcinfo5/public/en_it) but not sure which routes it applies to right now. it's subject to availability.

perhaps the ugpgrade is confirmed at ticketing time rather than checkin time ? in which case this is pretty awesome for a CX or BA J regular.

That link is on the Italy website. I couldn't find a similar offer on BA's HK website.

QF used to have a long running promotion prior to the skybed but after CX's introduction of the slantbed to Sydney. It was a confirmed upgrade to F class on one leg of your trip to Sydney if you were booked in J. At least this promotion you could find out if your upgrade was confirmed or not. For this current CX upgrade promotion, it's a total lottery unless F and J class bookings are next to zero these days.
