It's possible but not real easy. Depending on the cost difference it may be worth it just to fly into SAN.

I've taken the train up to LAX a few times and you're looking at a 3-4 hour process, I'd guess the same is true for LGB.

I think you'll need to take a bus from the airport to a metrolink station and catch that to the nearest stop on the Amtrak route (Anaheim?). Someone who lives up there may be able to figure it out better but here's the LA Metro website for route planning

Just came across this thread....

LGB is probably the farthest airport from an Amtrak station. I believe Amtrak has bus service between LGB and LA Union Station. Go to the Amtrak website and enter Long Beach (airport) and San Diego for the trip. However, LA is in the opposite direction from San Diego...you have to go 15 miles north before heading southeast.

Out of LAX the "Flyaway" bus goes to Union Station and runs 24 hours. BUR is a few miles from Amtrak and I believe you can take a local shuttle or even a taxi. SNA is 10 miles from the Irvine station; probably need a cab.

The drive really isn't bad if you rent a car, about 1.75-2 hours from LGB to downtown SD on I-5. On a weekday go between 9am-3pm or after 6pm to avoid traffic. There are HOV lanes down to San Clemente and then they resume around Del Mar. Cars with 2 or more can use it.

If you are not in a hurry, CA-1 betwen Newport Beach and Dana Point is a very scenic detour. Between Oceanside and La Jolla, old US-101 follows the beach and goes through a lot of laid-back beach towns. I-5 runs parallel a few miles inland and you can always bail if you're running out of time or had enough.
