I am thinking the recession hasn't hit any of the California hotels for good discounts. I am looking for reasonable places to stay for 2 or 3 nights? Doesn't seem like Hilton or Marriott patronizes these places on the west coast. Any suggestions. Less than 300 per night?

In Santa Barbara, we have stayed at the Doubletree quite a few times and really like the property. I've seen it in the low $200s midweek and high $200s weekend.

In Cambria there are some very reasonable motels on Moonstone Beach for under $200. We stayed at the Sea Otter but the Fogcatcher and the Pelican Cove Inn are also fine. We didn't find Cambria terribly interesting.

Bacara Resort is running a 3 for 2 night special. At 395 for a basic room, that gets you under 300/night.

On hilton...there is an Embassy Suites in San Luis Obispo, not too far from Cambria...maybe 30 minutes south.

Marriott..there is a Courtyard by Marriott in San Luis Obispo and in nearby Paso Robles.

You mentioned you were looking for reasonable places to stay for 2 or 3 nights?... Consider 2 nights in Santa Barbara and 2 in the Cambria area.

Santa Barbara offers more shopping and dining choices. Nice beaches too.

Cambria is close to Hearst Castle and is worth touring.

All of these area have great wine tasting too.
