Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - YVR-HKG Baggage Allowance

View Full Version : YVR-HKG Baggage Allowance

I know the standard baggage allowance for YVR-HKG is 50lbs and that the maximum weight is 70lbs. However, they don't list the fees for going over 50lbs. Does anyone know how much it is for going over 50, but under 70?

Furthermore, I noticed that MPC Green (for $50USD) gives you the privilege of "Excess baggage allowance redemption", does this mean that you can go up 70lbs for your luggage without paying any extra fees (other than the $50USD/year)?

Also, is there any credit card or bank programs/promotions that allow for free MPC membership in Canada? I already know about the RBC Cathay Pacific Visa Card, but that has a $120/year fee.

Thanks!

You can redeem Asiamiles for excess baggage charge. It is 8,000 miles per piece for YVR-HKG.@:-)

Oh... ok; so MPC Green has no benefits at all then except for check-in counter?

Anyone know the answer to my other question as to how much they charge for overweight baggage (above 50 and under 70lbs). And how lenient are they for 1-5 lbs over?

Also, similar question for the max length. It says max combined length is 62 inches then in the fine print it goes on to say absolute maximum is 80 inches. Am I correct to assume that they charge you for going above 62 inches (but below 80 inches)? If so, how much? Again, how lenient are they when going over 1-3 inches in the combined length?

Thanks!

N.B.: I find it really odd how they don't list the exact fees on their website. Just that "extra fees may apply".

MPC green has literally no benefit! I can't think of any other benefit other than your boarding priority and your very slim chance of op-up on a fully booked flight. Be a silver tier or higher, then you'd start enjoying some benefits such as lounge invitation, priority check in (in J counter), and priority baggage tag.

An exception is if you're originated at HKG. I think they have a designated check in counter for all MPC members, including green. CMIIW though, it's been quite sometime since I have not travel to/from HKG other than for transitting.

I believe MPC counters are not only available at HKG. I remember seeing ones in SIN and YYZ. However, they're combined with J counters.

I've also seen those MPC counters in YVR used in conjunction J counters. As for baggage charges, I believe they start because of the high fuel prices back in the summer and is comparable to the rate of US carrier if not mistaken.

Thanks for the replies. I've contacted Cathay Pacific and they've informed me that weight overage fee is $25USD/bag.

That's amazing considering the weight overage at Air Canada is $100CAD/bag!

Another question:
On the Cathaypacific.com website there's a section called "Retrive My Booking". Does that only work if you ordered your ticket online? Or should it work for any ticket?

Yes, I have already read that (before asking). The reason I asked is because when I log-in, it doesn't show my itinerary even though I supplied my Asia Miles to my travel agent at the time of booking.

The FAQ does not go into detail as to which type of booking (point of sale wise) is required for it to show up.

double check whether your travel agent actually entered your asia miles number when they booked your ticket with cathay. many TAs forget, or don't realize that for cx flights, you have to have a number to view your itin.

it says on the faq only marco polo/asia miles members can view itin. it's regardless of how you actually book your ticket, as long as your number was entered when you bought the ticket.

with regards to excess baggage fees, it should be $20 or $25 USD for each? i remember reading it on another thread just recently

Hi, yes, my asia miles number is in fact shown on my itinerary; but it still does not show up. Any ideas? Thanks.

As mentioned in my previous post, I phoned Cathay and they have confirmed it is $25 for overweight baggage.

If you are an MPO member and have recently have a status change, that could be the issue. Call MPO and have them correct it if that is the case. Even if it is not the case, you should still call MPO or AM and see what's wrong with it.

Yes, I have contacted AsiaMiles, but they said they see it in their systems and are unsure why I can't see if on the cathay website or the asia miles website. Any other suggestions?

EDIT: I called the HK AsiaMiles number and the problem has been solved. It funny how the Canada AsiaMiles/Cathay number weren't able to do anything.

EDIT 2: Special thanks to b-kpf for helping me out via PM.
