Don't laugh, I know 'budget' and 'Japan' don't usually go together.

I've been to Japan once before, but I didn't go to Tokyo. I just got one of the good tickets to Tokyo for May, so I'm going to have to find lodging. When I say 'budget', I mean hostel pricing.

should get you to the Tokyo hostels there.

Maybe someone else here has actually stayed at them?

And they have a number of reviews on the site.

I stayed at a place near Narita (~1800 yen/person/night) but I would only recommend this if you have a connection leaving the next day as it is far from everything to do in the Tokyo area. PM me for more info on that.

I also spent about a week staying at K's House Tokyo (~3000 yen/person/night) which was quite decent, recently remodeled and clean. It is near the Kuramae subway station. It is supposedly the top hostel in Tokyo, but I was not blown away.

I have also spent a night at the bakpak hostel Tokyo, which is near Ueno. Also about 3000 yen/person/night. Not as new as K's House, but more than adequate.

PM if you want more info on any of these.

I wish this myth would die once and for all. Even with the current exchange rates Japan is very affordable

Here are two threads from this forum

Post 7 here http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/japan/921911-1st-time-japan-need-help.html shows an inexpensive 7 day itinerary covering Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka/Nara

And here are details of an 11 day itinerary in the Kansai and Okayama area

Thank you very much LapLap ^

I was in a rush this morning and did not have time to search for the said threads

And I wish you luck in your endeavor. Not sure if it was you, but many years ago people were discussing price of accomodation in the Mileage Run forum (MR to Japan, though not Tokyo IIRC), and one of the most memorable quotes posted was this is where money goes to die which was quickly shown to be a falsehood by a more knowledgeble poster.

This is one of the biggest list of Hostel type lodging you'll find for Tokyo

Within the map linked to here:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/japan/799625-my-map-tokyo-hotels-restaurants.html

There are lots of lodgings with a Yen sign. All of these denote places with shared toilets and bathrooms, usually the cheapest kinds of lodgings.

In particular, look at the area around Ueno (and to the North East of Ueno) and Ikebukuro for cheap rooms with ensuite facilities. Keeping to places on the JR network (mainly the Yamanote line) will help you keep tabs on your travel spending also.
