Hilton HHonors - Noob MR question: minimum distance required?

Hey all...
I am 2 nights short of hitting gold (although the website says I only have 8 nights this year, I have email from HHonors telling me that I had until the end of April to get the requisite 36 nights using rolling tier from last year which leaves me 2 nights left.)
I don't have any work travel scheduled right now but I want to get it out of the way and am considering a Mattress run. My wife was told by her friend (heresay, I know...) that for a stay to count it has to be a minimum distance from your home address. For example, I couldn't stay at the embassy suites 5 miles away to cover these last 2 days.
Is there any truth to this or can I stay any distance and have it count?
Thanks,
-Kevin
I have never heard of such a requirement.
If anything, you could just change your address...
I had heard rumors that some municipalities won't let locals stay in hotels (because they are probably up to no good ;)) but I don't know how that could be enforced.

Thanks for the super-quick reply... I thought it sounded a little off...
It's been awhile (I don't drink anymore), but I've gotten rooms near the harbor and/or near the stadium on nights I didn't want to drive home.... But I can see them worrying, especially about local teenagers... :D

I have stayed at the Hilton literally across the street from my apartment and the stays have posted without trouble.

Same here - I've booked stays for friends in from out of town when the guest room at my place was unavailable, they stay less than 2 miles from my house, stays post to my account just fine.

That's something I didn't know. Are you saying that if I book a room for someone else on my hhonors account I can get credit for their stay?
I'm used to the airlines where I have to be the person whose butt is in the seat to get credit...

I think what ColumbiaPete is saying is that you can book a room in your name, show up to check in, then give the key card to another person. That's the only way I'm aware of to get the stay credit.

You are supposed to actually stay in the room. So you have to be there to check them in. They can pay with their card, they can reserve the room with their card, but your name has to be on the reservation, and some hotels will require you to stand before the desk before you get any points for it (I have even had a few tell my wife that when she checked in before I did)
A few years ago I picked up 16 or 18 stays one night after the other at hotels all within 10 miles of my house while we were in closing hell. They don't care, there is no distance requirement. Not that anybody would ever ask, but if they do tell them plumbing problem, inlaws visiting, etc.

I'd chalk it up to urban myth, but I can't say I've ever heard anything so bizarre.
At least you've come to the right place to get the correct information. ^

That's 'zackly what ColumbiaPete is saying...I showed up and paid for the room.

There's this thread about "no locals" policy in Seattle: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hilton-hhonors/904732-no-locals-policy.html
BUT, I've done a bed run at Hampton Inn Dulles (South) and it worked fine.
