Gents and ladies
Need help - need to book 2 tix HKG-JFK-HKG.

CX prices are beyond ridiculous, HK$60K each for flight via Vancouver and HK$80K each for direct - beyond crazy and, I guess, is the power of a monopoly (UA & Continental do not count:)

Any suggestions on how to do it. my smartest idea is one of the foll

a. buy 2 K class tix and upgrade (but need 160,000 miles)
b. buy 1 I class tix and get a companion tix for 95,000 miles

I hv 80,000 miles, so b is possible with top-up but still will be very expensive.

Your suggestions very welcome.
Regards

Go to Seoul (use miles), buy two business class round the world tickets for about HK$27,500+taxes each; use the AA agent to minimize taxes. Fly SEL-HKG-JFK-HEL-HKG-SEL (or something like that).

For HK$43,000+taxes each, do it in First Class.

Go to the OneWorld forum to find out about the delights of OneWorld Explorer RTW tickets. You could add a load of segments in Europe or North America and a sidetrip in Asia for no extra charge (except some minimal taxes) if you want.

Very helpful - many thanks. Did not realize the dramatic price differences for the same RTW fare from different countries of origin - Korea is almost half of a fare beginning in HK.

Quick clarification - what do you mean by 'use the AA agent' - I canot see a way to book it online on AA. Please clarify for a newbie to RTW fares and tickets.

Many thanks

Alternative solution:

1) Fly BR or OZ in J.... the prices are very attractive

2) Fly ex-TPE D to SFO/LAX, connect to JFK via AA

3) Fly HKG-YYZ, connect to JFK via AA (HKG-YYZ in CX J is only HK$44,XXX)

You can book RTWs online at oneworld.com, but they automatically send it to the first carrier for ticketing and since that is CX the taxes will be higher. The alternative is to set it up via the AA RTW desk for ticketing through AA's General Sales Agent in Korea. Unfortunately that GSA does not accept credit card payments remotely, but they do accept wired funds. So you could ticket it that way and then just fly to SEL, turn round and come back on the same plane with the new RTW e-ticket.

There are many many discussions on this in the OneWorld forum. I suggest you go there and do some reading and searching.

OP wants to fly CX on most if not all the segments

Exactly. Once you've done it, you'll wonder why you waited so long.

Thanks for this excellent advice also from myself. I have never done an RTW ticket but that sounds rather good for my present travel needs.

Yup! Cheap I and D fares are available ex-TPE. For J, I believe its around HK$30k++ straight to JFK.

Perhaps it's cheaper from ICN (due to Won's depreciation)?

Got TWD114139 TPE/xHKG/JFK/MIA/JFK/xHKG/TPE (about HKD25,500) with tax. But that promo expired Feb 16th.

TPE/xHKG/SFO or LAX was about TWD80,00

Will try ICN, for my next trip - thanks!

If anyone knows of other promos.....

Christep: I will be in SEL on business for a few days soon. Would I be able to book the ticket through AA RTW desk and have it issued in SEL by visiting the GSA office for on-site CC payment?? Or do you mean they do not accept ex-Korean CCs?

Thanks - JRK
